17 Days of Witchlore | Day 11
The Witching Hour: Why 3 AM Became So Feared 🖤

Ever wonder why 3 AM is supposedly the most haunted hour of the night?

The idea of a witching hour has been around for centuries, but it wasn’t always associated with 3 AM.

In European folklore, the hours around midnight were often associated with witches, ghosts, spirits, and other supernatural activity.

Nighttime was believed to be particularly dangerous because darkness offered cover for things that weren’t supposed to be wandering among the living.

The term witching hour appears in English literature as early as the eighteenth century, including in a 1775 poem by William Cowper.

But the specific association with 3 AM is much more recent and has been popularized through horror movies, paranormal television, and modern supernatural beliefs.

You may have heard that 3 AM is considered a mockery of the traditional Christian association of Christ’s death with 3 PM. That’s a popular modern explanation, but it isn’t a well-established historical origin of the witching hour.

And here’s something else worth knowing: different cultures have their own beliefs about when spirits are most active. Midnight, the hours before dawn, and other transitional times have all carried supernatural significance.

So while 3 AM might be the hour everyone talks about today, historically, the witching hour was never universally fixed to one particular time.

Witches’ Familiars: More Than Just Black Cats 🖤

When you hear the term witch’s familiar, you probably picture a black cat sitting beside a witch. But historically, familiars were believed to be something much stranger than ordinary pets.

During the witch trials in England and Scotland, accused witches were sometimes said to have supernatural spirits that assisted them with their magic.

These spirits could supposedly take the form of cats, dogs, toads, mice, and other animals. Some accounts even described them as strange creatures that didn’t resemble any recognizable animal.

And here’s where things get interesting.

According to certain witch trial testimonies, familiars were believed to enter into agreements with witches, carry out magical tasks, and sometimes demand to be fed with drops of blood.

In some cases, ordinary birthmarks, moles, and skin irregularities were interpreted by witch hunters as evidence that a person had been feeding a familiar spirit.

Of course, these accounts largely come from accusations, interrogations, and witch trial records, not reliable evidence that people actually possessed supernatural creatures.

But they tell us quite a bit about how people understood witchcraft and feared the supernatural.

Today, many witches use the term familiar to describe an animal companion they feel a particularly strong spiritual connection with.

Too many people are acting like Santa Muerte is a bandwagon trend. Speak up for her people and stop erasing her culture.

In Sicily, the dead don’t just return to be remembered. They come bearing gifts. 🕯️🍊

Long before Halloween became what it is today, Sicilian families celebrated Festa dei Morti, the Feast of the Dead, on November 2nd.

Traditionally, children were told that their deceased loved ones would return during the night, leaving sweets, toys, and small gifts for them to discover in the morning. Families prepared special foods, visited cemeteries, and honored the people who came before them.

And some of those traditions are still alive today.

From frutta martorana, the colorful marzipan fruits, to pupi di zucchero, elaborate sugar figures, and the traditional baskets of sweets and gifts, Festa dei Morti is a beautiful example of how Sicilian culture has maintained a relationship with its dead.

It’s a celebration of family, ancestry, remembrance, and the belief that the people we love don’t simply disappear when they die.

As someone who practices within my own Sicilian folk traditions, this is one of those customs I especially love sharing. There’s something beautiful about a culture that teaches its children to associate their ancestors not only with grief, but with generosity, love, and the joy of being remembered.

I’ve put together a little guide to the traditions surrounding Festa dei Morti, including the foods, folklore, and customs that make this celebration distinctly Sicilian.

Because our dead are still part of the family. 🖤
