Not all pavement joint treatments do the same thing. Surface applications can help reduce water intrusion and surface deterioration. But in this NRRA study, VRAM was the only treatment that consistently increased asphalt content within the joint by 2-3%.

The result? Significantly slower crack propagation across three field projects. If you want to improve joint durability, you have to do more than seal the surface. You have to change the composition of the joint.

The National Asphalt Pavement Association’s recent webinar had some interesting takeaways: Out of 51 airfield pavement technologies, high-density longitudinal joints ranked 8th as a high priority based on impact, feasibility, and industry need.

The AAPTP study evaluated technologies with the most promise for airfields, and the final report delivers an actionable implementation framework to help the industry prioritize emerging solutions.

One of the worst things you can hear when you’ve just paved a road: “Hey, we failed to meet the joint density requirement.”
Centerline density is essential, yet hard to reach — a recipe for risk. To avoid this risk, agencies and contractors are applying a VRAM material under the joint before paving. With VRAM, they waive the need for joint density testing in the first place.

Up in Wisconsin, they are serious about their roads!
This year, the Waukesha County Department of Public Works partnered with Asphalt Materials, Inc. on a first-of-its-kind field research project to compare notched-wedge and traditional butt joints, with and without J-Band VRAM (notched-wedge joints are often used to improve driver safety at transitions between paved and unpaved lanes).

The findings shed light on how joint construction practices and VRAM technology interact to improve pavement performance – a benefit to roads far beyond Waukesha County. We look forward to sharing the results soon.
