Some caterpillars have a remarkable defensive trick that makes them look much more dangerous than they really are.
When threatened, certain sphinx moth caterpillars can retract their head and enlarge the front segments of their body. Markings on these segments can create the convincing impression of a snake's face, including prominent false eyes.
The display is not a true transformation, but a defensive illusion. For a small caterpillar facing a predator, looking like something much larger can provide a valuable moment of hesitation.
