What's your favorite fall-blooming native plant?

Hummingbirds, monarch butterflies, queen bumblebees and native bees all depend on home gardens in autumn. Here are five essential native nectar plants — curated by the State Botanical Garden of Georgia — to make your fall garden a pollinator powerhouse.

Bats, native plants, live animals, art, music, and more. Bat Fest is happening this Saturday, and we’ll be there!

We’re excited to return to Bat Fest at Bear Creek Nature Center - Environmental Education on Saturday, September 12 from 2pm to 8pm. This is a fun community event with activities for all ages and opportunities to learn more about bats and the habitats they depend on.

Cottage Garden Natives will be there all day with a native plant sale, including plants that can help provide food and habitat for the wildlife in your yard.

There will be live animal encounters, nature talks, arts and crafts, canoes, hiking trails, live music, food trucks, and plenty more throughout the day. If you stick around until the end, you can join the scientists for a bat-detecting walk at dusk and hopefully see some wild bats emerge over the pond.

We’re excited to be heading to one of our favorite hiking and birding spots this weekend!

On Saturday, September 12, Cottage Garden Natives will be one of the vendors at our first native plant sale hosted by Monarchs Across Georgia , and it will also be our first time bringing native plants to the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve.

Come see us from 9 a.m. to noon and shop our selection of pollinator plants, including milkweed for monarchs, native azaleas, and so much more. We’ll have plenty of plants with us, but we can't bring everything. If there’s something specific you’re looking for, there’s an easy way to make sure you get it.

Place an order on our website and, when you check out, let us know that you’ll be picking it up at the Monarchs Across Georgia sale. We’ll have your order ready to pick up at our booth. Just look for the purple tent!

The third stop on our recent Native Plant Pilgrimage was Mt. Cuba Center in Hockessin, Delaware. This garden has been on my bucket list for years, and it did not disappoint! The contrast between the naturalistic gardens at the North Carolina Botanical Garden and the more formal designs at the Mt. Cuba Center was a testament to the many possibilities for gardening with native plants.
