Today is Tanabata, the Star Festival holiday in Japan, when people celebrate by writing wishes on small strips of paper called tanzaku & hanging them from bamboo branches in hopes they’ll reach the stars 🎋

Inspired by this tradition, today’s afternoon snack was habutae mochi, a delicacy from Fukui prefecture. Made from pillowy-soft mochi, each rectangular piece is rolled up in creations by 【羽二重餅の古里】マエダセイカ , but when unrolled, the shape reminded me of tanzaku. I served it on a bamboo leaf plate from my own collection, alongside green tea in the smaller version of our popular 39Arita Double Wall Cup.

A quiet moment to make space for wishes, hopes, and intentions ✨
