THIS IS CLEARLY NOT MY WORK!
So I got asked to take a look at a new construction build that’s currently in progress. The homeowner had some serious concerns about the quality of the work. It’s not typically what I do, but I figured I’d stop by, take a quick peek, call the homeowner, and be on my way—no big deal.
I showed up, took one look around, and gave my honest professional opinion: 'THIS LOOKS LIKE S**T!'
Next thing I know, I’m asked to meet with the General Contractor. I reluctantly obliged. But instead of just a site supervisor showing up, the actual owner of the company walked in. I introduced myself, walked him into the first bathroom, and started pointing out the issues.
Before I could even finish, the owner dropped the classic line: 'I’ve been doing this longer than you’ve been alive.'
Naturally, that was all it took to set the room on fire.
Things turned up a notch real quick. I looked right at him and asked, 'How much of this work have you actually performed yourself?'
He started stumbling over his words before finally admitting, 'Well... not much lately.'
'Exactly. So you don't know s**t. The industry has changed in thirty years.'
That clearly struck a nerve. He couldn't handle getting called out, stormed out of the house, and kept running his mouth all the way down the driveway.
I just smiled and called after him: 'Good thing I took photos of all your s**tty work!'
Then, just because I had some extra time on my hands, I sat down and typed up a three-page, photo-documented report and emailed it straight to the homeowner.
It’s time for builders to be held accountable for the subcontractors they employ
