“My key fob stopped working. Do I need to buy a new one?”

Not necessarily! And before you spend money replacing it, there are a few things worth checking.

🔋 1. Check the battery. A weak or dead battery is one of the most common reasons a remote stops responding.

🚗 2. Try your spare key. If your spare works normally, that can help narrow down the problem.

🔐 3. Check whether the vehicle still starts. On many vehicles, the remote buttons and the immobilizer system operate differently. Your remote might stop unlocking the doors while the key can still start the engine!

🛠️ 4. Don’t automatically assume you need a new fob. Sometimes it’s a battery, damaged buttons, a connection issue, or something that needs further diagnosis.

🔑 ASK JIMMY MONDAY — Why does my car key cost more than a regular key?

It’s a fair question. A modern car key may look simple from the outside, but there can be quite a bit happening inside.

Depending on your vehicle, that key or fob may contain a transponder chip, remote or proximity electronics, immobilizer communication, and an emergency key blade. Then the correct key still needs to be identified, cut when necessary, and properly programmed to your vehicle.

So when you’re having an automotive key made, you’re not just paying for a piece of metal or plastic — you’re paying for the correct key, specialized equipment, programming, cutting, and the knowledge to make everything work with your vehicle’s security system.

And there’s another reason I ask for your year, make, model, VIN and sometimes a picture of your existing key or fob before quoting a job: I want to make sure I’m giving you the correct information and price the first time.

Demonstrate competence before asking for the business.

That’s something I’ve come to believe more and more as a business owner.

I’ve never been a fan of pressure sales. I don’t want to convince someone that they have to hire me.

I’d rather answer their questions. Give them useful information. Explain their options. Maybe even help them save some money — and then let them decide.

Because if you know what you’re doing, you shouldn’t have to pressure people into choosing you.

Give people enough value before they ever spend a dollar with you, and choosing you becomes the easy part.

You may not win every job that way.

But the customers you do win tend to remember you, trust you, recommend you, and come back.

I’d rather build a business on that than on being the best salesman in the room.

Demonstrate competence. Provide value. Earn trust.
Then let the customer decide.
