About From Here to Home Essentials
I've always been a bit of a tree-hugger. I grew up with a deep appreciation for nature, spending large parts of my childhood in the lakes of Michigan, the shores of Florida's Gulf coast, and outside with my pets. In 2019, I applied for a citizen-science sailing mission with eXXpedition, on a whim. I never expected to be chosen, but later that year, I stood on a sailboat with new sailing sisters, a sunburn, and the task of collecting ocean water samples to better understand microplastics and ocean pollution. Multiple reusable bags full of trash, including a netting from a shipping container, on a beach in Antigua

Our clean up of a protected beach- which we were told would be clean because of its protected status- netted us six MASSIVE bags of trash, including some plastics webbing that came off a shipping container. And the samples we took? Full of microplastics that wind up in the deepest depths of the ocean, in the bellies of marine life, and eventually, in our water and soil. Plastic made it possible, I suppose, but now they're coating out planet, filling our oceans and waterways, and microplastic is even in the air we breathe. We simply can't maintain this relationship with plastic. I became obsessed with the idea of reducing my own personal plastic waste, not only to reduce my footprint, but to demonstrate that there is a need and a want for plastic-free products. From Here to Home Essentials was born. In my own small way, From Here to Home Essentials is my contribution to a greener, healthier, less-plasticky-planet.

Because...

Plastics execs knew for years that microplastics can accumulate in human bodies (LATimes).

Microplastics may react to the water in our bodies and cause health problems (Smithsonian, NLM, PMCID: PMC12491214 PMID: 41048613).

Plastics industry leaders knew for decades that recycling wasnt feasible for the amount and types of plastic they produced, but promoted recycling anyway (NPR).

Oil firms team up to create dark money funds to block climate laws (the Guardian, The Lever).

Once you see the plastics problem, you want be able to un-see it.

Join the refill revolution and help kick plastic and oil to the curb!

Every swap, every refill, is a shift to a better, healthier, less-polluted world!

The Holiday Market Season is my favorite! Partially because I'm part polar bear, partially because I love showing off how many thoughtful and practical gifts are plastic-free, low-waste, and downright *useful.*

Coming up first, AROID FAIR at Plants Alive! this is a two-day event jam-packed with workshops, plant bingo, ALPACA PETTING (Sat), flash tattoos and so much more. And it's totally free to attend, families welcome!

I'll be there Sunday, but both days will be worth checking out!

Where will I see you?

HOT TAKE: I've told people not to buy from me. Yeah, it's a little unorthodox for a business owner, but like I said, I try to run my business according to my values!

If you have something at home that does the same thing as a pack of un-paper towels, great! Use those, keep your money. You have a loofah tree? Great! Save your cash.

If you're on a tight budget, maybe you're truly not in the place to make a plastic-free swap that's slightly more expensive (even if it'll save money in the long run). I get it. I hear you. If cash is tight, take care of yourself! I am CONFIDENT From Here to Home will be here and ready when you are ready to make the swaps!

Like I said, my ways may not be for everyone, but they're right for me and From Here to Home!

And I'm so happy you're here!

I learned that the parm Shaker lids are compatible with mason jars of all sizes and now I'm unstoppable.

Instead of tossing a broken dry shampoo bottle, with product I liked, I repurposed a jar from my horde and a Shaker lid, and Ive got a perfectly good travel container!

I need to give the edges a little hot glue, since dry shampoo is smaller than parm... but its good as new. And I didnt have to buy a new anything OR waste any product.

What did you upcycle or repurpose this month?
