UPDATE The individual that took items from our shop yesterday without paying reached out to us last night. She apologized for what she did and told us they would be returned today. Early this morning, the items were dropped off along with a couple of other items that were also taken but not specifically mentioned in my post.

I know many have recommended that we share the pictures. I am choosing to protect their identities from social media since they did the right thing and returned everything. Since I had already filed a report, there is documentation. If it happens again, it will be seen as a pattern vs one bad decision. If it happens again, we will press charges. Until then, I choose to protect them, pray for them and hope the behavior changes.

The daughter also wrote a very nice letter apologizing for her involvement in the situation as well. I commend her for that and hope it was sincere.

To the community - WOW! Owning a small business in a small town is tough, BUT it is so incredibly rewarding because of the relationships we have built. We are so grateful for the support that was shown yesterday when our initial posts were made and even throughout today with calls, messages, likes, shares, comments, visits and orders. YOU are the reason we keep going. Thank you so much for the love and support you have shown to us, our staff, and our little business. We love you all! 🩷

To the lady who came in today and left with the butter yellow LULU MAC sweatshirt, camo cup, and checker wallet—you forgot to pay before you shoved them into your hoodie. Please come by and return the items or do the right thing and pay for them. We have very clear images of your face, your daughter’s face (the one that handed you the cup) and a very clear image of your vehicle on camera. I know you tried to avoid the cameras in the store and the parking lot, but it’s impossible to avoid them.

A police report has been filed and the footage and screenshots are being provided. For now, I’m choosing not to blast you, we will give you an opportunity to do the right thing.

To whom it may concern…
Let me introduce myself, my name is Eddie Stell (who you may not know) I’m the husband of Sharon Stell ( who you probably know) we are the owners of this small business Small Town Variety. She is going to kill me for posting to the business page but I’m hoping it reaches the right people.

Having a retail business for almost 6 years now 4 years brick and mortar in Mt Olive you’re almost assured they will be some sort of theft. It’s a shame but just a fact and I’m sure every business deals with it. It’s happened over the years usually small items not worth the effort of prosecuting but it’s become more common and more valuable items lately. We have cameras inside and outside of the store as most of you have seen. Most of the time we know who it is and generally know while you are still in the store ( you’re not as sneaky as you think you are) but we tell the girls not to confront avoid conflict. FYI It’s going to be a different story if I’m around.
Now we could shame you and call you out and post pictures and names on Social media but we’re not. Not yet anyways, there will be another post addressing the theft that happened today. I would ask you to reconsider and know the effects your greed may cause.

This is aggravating because I see the huge amount of time, effort and money put into this business by my wife and so you know it has not produced one red cent in 6 years for our household. We have to make decisions monthly is it worth keeping open but her passion for it, the love for the community, and she loves the relationships with customers she has grown to know.
Though it hasn’t created income for us it has created flexible jobs for those who have worked the counter, some girls being able to work while in college, it has sponsored every kind of sports team to all surrounding schools, donations to special events, church events and donations to shelters.

You maybe stealing because your in tough times and in difficult situations but I’m confident your not based on the items that are taken it’s just greed.
But if you truly need help reach out the right way, there’s no doubt she would be willing to help you I’ve seen it. She’ll do whatever in her capacity and then pray for you when she gets home.
The ones that continues to take advantage your going to be asked kindly to leave.

To the huge number of loving, faithful, and honest shoppers…..
My wife loves you and you bring tremendous joy to her life and I thank you for that.
