Fourteen days after the white sand sow, the first true leaves are showing.

That's the trigger. Each seedling gets lifted individually with tweezers and seated into a swelled Jiffy peat pellet to build out its root system before going into soil.

The White Solemacher from the February sow is already flowering and fruiting. These follow behind it and the run of red French varieties.

Local pickup only — New Braunfels, TX.

These are alpine strawberry seeds on white sand, and the sand serves several purposes.

Fragaria vesca seeds are photoblastic. They need light to trigger germination. Bury them, even shallowly, and germination rates drop sharply or fail entirely.

The sand holds them at the surface, in contact with moisture, and fully exposed to light. White was a deliberate choice. These seeds are roughly the size of a grain of pepper, and the contrast makes every seed visible.

Using sand has also helped eliminate the algae and fungus gnat problems that come with organic surface media.

Each cup gets sealed and goes into the germination dome under Samsung full-spectrum LED bars.

When the first true leaf appears, each seedling gets moved individually by tweezers into a peat pellet to build out its root system before going into soil.

Six varieties sowed 5/15: Pineapple Crush, Mignonette, Reine des Vallées, Déesse des Vallées, White Solemacher, and Hawaii 4.

First listing coming soon: White Solemacher, 6" pots, actively flowering.

Last year I started 10 Victoria Rhubarb seeds inside a grow tent in my house.Victoria Rhubarb is a cool-climate crop. New Braunfels is emphatically not a cool climate. That was the point. I wanted to find out which individuals could handle the heat and whether I could select toward something more thermally resilient over time.
I tracked each plant individually, culled the underperformers, and harvested from the survivors. From those plants, I was able to make several strawberry rhubarb and blueberry rhubarb pies from scratch, full size and miniature, to share with friends and family.

The rhubarb project is on pause for now, filed under "when I have more space." But that experiment is where Comal Cultivars actually started.

I'm a data analyst by profession. When something surprises me, I always want to know more about it. So when I grew an unnamed alpine strawberry from a $4 Lowes seed packet and tasted the fruit for the first time, I really wanted to know more. Intensely concentrated strawberry flavor with a floral, rose-like finish. Something that small shouldn't taste like that. I needed to understand what I was actually working with.

What I found: Fragaria vesca, the alpine strawberry, has dozens of named cultivars with distinct flavor profiles and centuries of cultivation history. Very few named cultivars are available locally in Central Texas. If you want them, you order from a national mail-order nursery, pay for shipping, and hope the plant survives the box.
So I sourced the genetics and started growing them here, so you don't have to.

Comal Cultivars is a small-batch specialty nursery in New Braunfels growing rare and heirloom alpine strawberry cultivars entirely from seed, in-house. Every plant is germinated and grown here. Every plant that leaves is healthy and actively growing — and the 6" plants are typically flowering or fruiting when they go home with you.

No shipping. No wholesale stock. No shortcuts.
