⚡ ELECTRICAL MYTH MONDAY ⚡

🚨 “The outlet still works, so it must be fine.”
❌ MYTH!

Just because an outlet is still supplying power doesn’t mean everything is working the way it should.

⚠️ Watch for warning signs like:

• 🔥 An outlet that feels hot or unusually warm
• 🟤 Brown or black discoloration
• 👃 A burning or unusual smell
• ⚡ Sparks when plugging something in
• 🔌 Loose plugs that don’t stay securely in the outlet
• 👂 Buzzing, crackling, or popping sounds

These can be signs of a loose connection, damaged receptacle, overloaded circuit, or another electrical issue.

💡 Electrical problems don’t always announce themselves by turning the power off.

If an outlet is showing any of these warning signs, don’t ignore it just because it “still works.”

👉 When in doubt, have it checked by a licensed electrician.

⚡ ELECTRICAL MYTH MONDAY ⚡

🚨 “It’s okay to use an extension cord as permanent wiring.”
❌ MYTH!

Extension cords are designed for temporary use, not as a permanent replacement for properly installed wiring.

If you have an extension cord running across your room, under a rug, behind furniture, or stretched across a walkway because you don’t have an outlet where you need one, that’s a sign your home may need a better electrical solution.

🔌 Extension cords can be damaged, overloaded, or become a trip hazard—and covering them can also prevent heat from properly dissipating.

💡 The better solution?
If you constantly need an extension cord in the same location, consider having a licensed electrician install a properly located receptacle.

Your electrical system should work with your home—not require a maze of extension cords to make it work. 😉

👇 How many extension cords do you have plugged in at your house right now? Be honest! 😂

When should you have your home’s electrical system inspected?

Most homeowners don’t think about an electrical inspection until something goes wrong. But an inspection can help identify potential problems before they become bigger—and potentially more expensive—issues.

Here are a few times an electrical inspection may be worth considering:

🏡 Buying a home?
An electrical inspection can help you understand the condition of the home’s electrical system before you make it your own.

🏠 Selling your home?
Knowing about potential electrical issues ahead of time can help prevent surprises during the selling process.

🔨 Planning a renovation?
Adding rooms, appliances, lighting, or other electrical loads? It’s a good time to make sure your electrical system can support your plans.

⚡ Living in an older home?
Older electrical systems may not have been designed for the amount of technology and electrical demand today’s homes require.

🚨 Experiencing warning signs?
Flickering lights, frequently tripping breakers, buzzing, burning smells, warm outlets, or discoloration are all reasons to have the issue investigated.

💡 HOMEOWNER TIP:
Don’t wait for an electrical problem to become an emergency. Understanding the condition of your electrical system is part of taking care of your home.

⚡ ELECTRICAL MYTH MONDAY ⚡

🚨 “A power strip gives me more power because I can plug more things into it.”
❌ MYTH!

A power strip gives you more places to plug things in—not more electrical capacity.

Your circuit still has the same limits it had before you plugged in that power strip.

🔌 Plugging in a TV, gaming system, computer, space heater, hair dryer, and other high-power devices into the same circuit can put a lot of demand on that circuit.

And remember: just because you have room for more plugs doesn’t mean your circuit has room for more load.

💡 Think of a power strip like adding more seats to a car. You have more places to sit, but you haven’t made the car’s engine any bigger.

If you’re constantly running out of outlets or relying on multiple power strips and extension cords, it may be time to have your electrical system evaluated.

Do you know what those numbers on your breakers mean?

You’ve probably looked at your electrical panel and seen 15, 20, 30, 40, or 50 printed on the breakers.

But what do those numbers actually mean?

⚡ Those numbers represent amps (amperes) — the amount of electrical current the circuit is designed to handle.

For example:

🔌 15-amp circuit — commonly used for general lighting and receptacles.

🔌 20-amp circuit — commonly used for certain kitchen, bathroom, garage, and other higher-demand circuits.

⚡ 30+ amp circuits — often used for larger, dedicated equipment and appliances.

🚨 Here’s the important part:
You can’t simply replace a 15-amp breaker with a 20-amp breaker because you’re tired of it tripping.

The breaker, wiring, equipment, and circuit design all have to work together properly.

Your breaker is there to protect the circuit — not to be an inconvenience.

💡 HOMEOWNER TIP:
Take a look at your electrical panel. Do you know what each breaker controls?

If your panel isn’t labeled correctly, that’s something worth getting addressed.

What is that TEST & RESET button on your outlet?

You’ve probably seen outlets with TEST and RESET buttons—but did you know GFCI protection can also be provided by a circuit breaker in your electrical panel?

⚡ What does a GFCI do?
A GFCI (Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter) monitors electrical current and can quickly interrupt power when it detects a ground-fault condition that could create a shock hazard.

GFCI protection can be provided by:

🔌 GFCI receptacles — the outlets with the TEST & RESET buttons.

⚡ GFCI circuit breakers — installed in your electrical panel and capable of providing GFCI protection to the circuit.

You’ll commonly see GFCI protection in areas such as:

🚿 Bathrooms
🍳 Kitchens
🚗 Garages
🌧️ Outdoor areas
💧 Other locations where electrical equipment may be exposed to moisture

💡 HOMEOWNER TIP:

If an outlet suddenly loses power and you don’t see a tripped breaker, check nearby GFCI receptacles for a RESET button. The protection may also be provided by a GFCI breaker in your panel.

⚠️ If a GFCI won’t reset, trips repeatedly, or isn’t functioning properly, don’t just keep resetting it. There may be an electrical issue that needs to be investigated.

Understanding the safety devices protecting your home is an important part of being a homeowner!
