When designer Nick Olsen and his partner, Sam Bowman, found a one-in-a-million Manhattan apartment, they knew it deserved a dramatic turn worthy of a Broadway production. “I can appreciate
quiet decorating, but it’s just not who I am at my core,” says Olsen. ”I always want to embrace the theatrical.” Take, for example, the entryway, where he draped striped silk taffeta curtains around the entire room, painted the ceiling black, and hung a sculptural white shell pendant.

He’s It. For Michael Joerres Interiors, the best interiors are shaped by time. “I tend to ignore the idea that every room needs to look finished from day one,” says the Mark D. Sikes Interiors alum. “I encourage clients to leave room for discovery, whether that’s finding the right antique, adding artwork gradually, or allowing a space to develop naturally.” Read more about the 2026 FREDERIC It List at the link in our bio!

He’s It. “Design was a field I admired from afar, but I never considered it as a legitimate job,” says San Diego-based designer Alex Yanke of Westbourne Studio. After stints at a tech startup and real estate firm proved unfulfilling, Yanke took a leap of faith and started an internship with a small design firm in Los Angeles. Years later, in 2020, he opened Westbourne Studio, creating spaces that range from a spare Manhattan apartment to a seaside Tudor in La Jolla. Says Yanke, “Our projects can vary stylistically, but they’re connected by a common sensibility: restraint, warmth, and a balance between refinement and ease.” Read more about our 2026 FREDERIC It List at the link in our bio!

Introducing the brand new issue of FREDERIC, featuring on the cover Lily Dierkes’s latest vibrant and sophisticated Upper East Side project. “I love to use color,” says the rising star designer, who opened her own New York studio in 2020, “but I wouldn’t say it’s in a maximalist way— it’s always color as a device.”

Volume XXII of FREDERIC is on its way to newsstands and doorsteps now. We can’t wait for you to see it.
