For most of my career, I’ve done freelance design work in addition to my 9-to-5, playing a role in the design of hotels, spas, coffee shops, multi-family developments, high-end homes, and commercial spaces across the country.

But I’ve also been on the other side, hiring freelancers as an interior designer and project manager. And in that experience, the pros (and cons) of hiring temp / freelance help became pretty clear. While the flexibility and extra hands are sometimes essential, onboarding can be clunky, and deliverables can be hit-or-miss.

So, in 2021, I founded AJD Studio, a B2B firm specializing in flexible, white-label interior design services.

We don’t just offer freelance help—we partner with your firm, align with your brand standards, and ensure every deliverable is polished, on-brand, and ready to go. With us, you get reliable, high-quality design support that flexes with your needs, so you can focus on leading, growing, and creating... the fun stuff.

All to say, we’re growing & would love to work with you! Feel free to reach out if you’d like to schedule a call to discuss.

As a kitchen designer, one of the top questions I get asked on repeat is, what material should I use for my countertops? So here’s the rundown on quartz. If you’re after a low-maintenance, no-fuss countertop material, quartz might be your new fav.

Since quartz is engineered (i.e. man-made) it’s durable, non-porous—fancy term for less likely to stain—and doesn’t require sealing or maintenance over time.

So, what’s the catch? It typically comes in solid colors, so if you’re after a stone effect you may not like the look. It can also discolor with high heat, so be sure to get some cute trivets along with your new kitchen.

Creating a cozy breakfast nook can actually make your kitchen feel MORE spacious! By carving out a corner of your kitchen for casual meals, you can utilize a space that may have quirky architecture or a lot of windows and create a functional spot for your morning coffee or quick family dinners.

Also, when the breakfast nook finishes coordinate with the kitchen, it makes everything look more custom & luxe🤩

When designing your kitchen, it’s tough to know which countertop material will really suit your lifestyle, maintenance preferences, vibe, and budget. So let’s go through some of the most popular options & I’ll give you the rundown on each.

Starting off strong with marble—the countertop material we hate to love. With it’s unique veining & timeless charm, it’s no wonder marble has been a staple in homes for centuries. But it’s certainly a bit high maintenance—it scratches, stains (red w**e lovers, beware!), and needs regular sealing & care. But if you love that classic, swoon-worthy look, marble might be worth the extra pampering!

Pros ✨
- luxurious look
- cool to the touch, great for baking!
- gorgeous, unique natural patterns
- natural stones can be refinished over time

Cons ✨
- prone to etching from acids like w**e & lemon
- requires regular sealing to prevent stains
- sensitive to heat

So, what do you think? Is it worth it?

Modern kitchens don’t have to be white & shiny! If you want to create your dream contemporary kitchen, while still keeping it cozy & welcoming, consider using mixed materials, handleless design, and creative geometry.

In this custom kitchen, we specified a combination of white oak & matte lacquer doors in a dark grey and utilized a channel system instead of handles. We kept the stone simple with quartz countertops & large-scale porcelain tiles for the backsplash.

This kitchen also features Viking & Miele appliances, lighting from DSHOP , and dining chairs from Restoration Hardware.

Photorealistic renderings are a great way to help you visualize all the different components & materials that make up a beautiful kitchen design. Without renderings, it can be difficult to see how it'll all come together. What do you think? Do you need the visual or can you imaging it with just a floor plan & a material board?
