Weathered grey cedar to barn red. Same gable, two days apart.

This is a solid-body stain rather than a paint. It penetrates the shingle and carries colour without building a thick film on top that can let go in sheets later. The cream trim, the rakes and the window casings were already cut in before these shingles were touched, which is why the first photo looks half finished.

And that is about it for the year. Once the overnight temperatures sit below fifty, a coating stops curing the way it is supposed to, and a finish that goes on in November is a finish that fails early. We would rather book you for April than hand you something that looks right for three weeks and wrong for three years.

If your exterior needs doing, now is the call. (401) 313-4346

Honey maple to slate grey, same kitchen.

Compare the two photos. The granite is the same. The range and the microwave are the same, in the same spots. The layout never moved. What changed is the cabinets. Doors and drawer fronts came off, hinges labelled, everything degreased, sanded, primed and sprayed, then hung back where it came from.

The degreasing is why most DIY cabinet paint fails. Kitchen grease builds up on the doors around the range for years, and if it is not cut off the surface properly, the primer just sits on top of it. The finish peels the first time somebody wipes a door down.

One note on timing. Cabinets are the job people want finished before anyone comes over, and that calendar is filling. If you are thinking about Thanksgiving or Christmas, this is the week to ask about it, not the first week of December.

That is bare cedar in the first photo. Everything that was on it came off by hand.

The shingles on this house had been failing, and a coating does not bond to failing material. It bonds to whatever sits underneath it. So the loose stuff gets scraped and sanded back to sound wood before anything else happens. Scraper, sander, dust extractor running off the end of it.

The second photo is a gable we have not reached yet. That is what the whole house looked like going in.

This step never shows up in the photo anybody asks for, and there is no way to make it look good. It is also the one that decides whether the finish holds or lets go in a few years.

Two photos of a house nobody is painting yet.

The first is a hall into a kitchen with the floor covered end to end and every seam taped down. The second is a dining room with the wainscot wrapped in plastic and the doorway papered off.

That is most of a day of work, and it is the line on the estimate people squint at. Here is what it buys.

Nothing gets dripped on. Nothing gets stepped in and tracked into the next room. The crew can move fast, because they are not being careful about the floor any more, they are being careful about the cut line. And when it all comes up at the end, the house looks like nobody was ever in it.

Ask anyone who has had a cheap paint job done. They almost never complain about the colour.

Those brown rings on the ceiling in the first photo are water.

You can't paint that out. The stain bleeds back through, and the plaster behind it has already let go. So the ceiling came down to the joists, new board went up, and it got taped, skimmed, sanded and painted. The wallpaper came off the walls while we were in there.

What stayed: the oak trim, the oak doors and French doors, the stained glass, the handrail. All original, all worked around rather than replaced. The kitchen cabinets and the counters were already there.

The photos run in order. The damage. The ceilings open. New board taped, with the windows masked and the floor papered. Then fresh walls against that natural oak, and the stair risers mid-job.

This one is repair and paint, not just paint. If you have a ceiling stain that keeps coming back, that is usually why. (401) 313-4346

White to mint green, and nothing else on this house changed.

Same roof, same garage doors, same windows, same trim profile. First photo is the garage end before we started. Second is that end of the house once we were off it. Third is the gable with the brick chimney, which is where you can read the colour honestly. Fourth is the side entry, with the door in an aqua a shade off the body. Fifth is the back.

This is also close to last call on exteriors. Coatings stop curing properly once the overnight temperatures sit below about fifty degrees, and in Rhode Island that is early November. If your house was on the list for this year, it needs to get on the schedule now.

Same front door, four days apart.

First photo: the portico and the door casing had gone flat and grey-blue, and an evergreen had grown up across the walk. Second photo is the same doorway in a teal that actually reads as a colour from the street. The planters and the cleared walk are the homeowner's own doing, not ours.

Third is the back patio, same teal on the trim and the step risers. Fourth is the side elevation, trim cut in clean against the clapboard.

The body colour on this house stayed where it was. Everything you are looking at is trim and entry work, and trim is most of what anyone actually notices from the sidewalk.

Three photos from two houses we had going last week.

First is a hallway papered end to end with one of our guys working at the far end of it. Second is a crew member heading into a sunroom with the doors open. Third is a living room mid-job, ladders up, floor covered, everything pushed to the middle and sheeted.

This is what most of a week actually looks like. The finished photo is one afternoon. The rest of it is tape, paper, ladders, and somebody's house that we have to hand back better than we found it.

Nobody books a painter for the plastic.

First two photos are two rooms in the same house before anything got coated. Furniture tented, floors papered end to end, blue tape run along every baseboard. That is most of a morning for a crew, and not one square inch of it shows up in the finished room.

Third photo is a finished bathroom in the same house, walls in a soft sage. The vanity, the stone top and the tile were all already there. The walls are ours.

The protection is not an add-on. It is the reason the finish lands clean and your things come out of it the way they went in.

Look at the first photo. Blue-grey walls, drop cloths down, the bench pulled out from under the windows.

Second photo is the same two windows a few days later in a warm cream. Same bench, same beadboard, same leaded glass in the upper sashes.

Third is the next room along, with the table and chairs back in it. Teal above the white wainscot.

Last two are the back entry, same door, before and after.

Interiors book out fast this time of year. If you want rooms finished before you have people over, this is the week to call. (401) 313-4346
