Property managers: can visitors actually SEE your signs, lights, and entrances? 🚗

Overgrown limbs around parking areas can create visibility problems, block lighting, and interfere with normal access.

Targeted pruning can help restore clearance while keeping the trees an asset to the property.

CHETS works with commercial and residential properties throughout Thurston County. If a tree is starting to get in the way, let's talk about a sensible maintenance plan.

TREE MYTH: "All that moss is killing my tree." 🌿

Around Thurston County, moss loves our cool, damp, shaded conditions. It commonly grows on bark without harming the tree.

Moss by itself doesn't mean a tree is rotten or dying.

What deserves attention? New cracks, dying limbs, trunk damage, major changes in lean, or movement at the roots.

Don't judge the tree by the moss. Look at its overall condition—and have anything concerning checked.

A branch doesn't have to be dead to become a concern. 🌳

Long limbs can carry a lot of weight far from the trunk. Add rain, wind, or existing structural weakness, and the stress on that connection can increase.

That doesn't mean every big branch needs to go. The right pruning may reduce end weight while preserving the tree's natural shape.

If you've got a long, heavy limb over a roof, driveway, or patio, let's look at the whole tree before making cuts.

Wet ground changes the equation. 🌧️

When heavy rain saturates the soil, strong winds can put extra stress on a tree's root system—especially if roots are already damaged or weakened.

Watch for NEW warning signs:
🌳 A tree suddenly leaning farther than before
🌳 Fresh cracks or lifting soil around the base
🌳 Visible movement of the root plate in the wind

If you spot these signs, keep people and vehicles clear and have the tree checked. Don't wait for the next gust to make the decision.

Sometimes a tree should come down.

Sometimes it needs pruning.

Sometimes it needs deadwood removed.

And sometimes the best thing to do is leave it alone.

We’d rather figure out what actually makes sense for the tree and the property than pretend every problem has the same solution.

Have something you want looked at?

It seems logical:

Cut branch → seal wound.

But trees don’t heal wounds the same way people do.

In most normal pruning situations, modern arboriculture doesn’t recommend coating every cut with wound paint or tar.

The better protection is making the right cut in the right place and letting the tree do what it’s built to do.

Construction damage to trees often starts before anyone realizes there’s a problem.

Trenching through roots.
Heavy equipment compacting soil.
Grade changes around the trunk.
Materials piled over root zones.

The tree may stay green for quite a while afterward — which makes the damage easy to miss.

If mature trees are staying on the property during construction, protecting the root area should be part of the plan.

Dead branches don’t necessarily mean the entire tree is dying.

Trees naturally shed limbs, and individual branches can die for plenty of reasons.

The problem is what’s underneath them.

A dead limb hanging over the back corner of a wooded lot is one thing.

A dead limb over your driveway, roof, patio, or play area is another.

A tree doesn’t need to be standing in the middle of an open field to be worked on.

Backyards, fences, sheds, landscaping, narrow access, nearby homes — those are normal parts of tree work.

A complicated location just means the job needs the right plan.
