🐟 IF YOUR KOI COULD TALK…

“Our pond is our entire world. Help us make it a healthy one!”

From the surface, a pond might look beautiful—but what is life like beneath the water?

Here’s what your koi would want you to know:👇🦈

💧 “Clear water isn’t always safe. Please test it!”

You can’t judge water quality by appearance alone. Ammonia and nitrite can harm us even when the water looks crystal clear. Regularly check ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and KH—the buffering capacity that helps keep pH stable.

Good filtration, regular maintenance, and appropriate water changes help keep our home healthy.

🫧 “We need oxygen—keep aeration flowing!”

We breathe oxygen dissolved in the water. Aeration and circulation help replenish it and support the beneficial bacteria in your biological filter. Warm water holds less oxygen, so pay extra attention during hot weather. A pretty waterfall doesn’t automatically mean we have enough!

🌊 “Give us room to grow and swim!”

We may arrive small, but we won’t stay that way! Plan for our adult size and your pond’s filtration capacity. Overcrowding increases waste and competition for oxygen. We also appreciate suitable depth, some shade, and protection from predators.

🍽️ “Feed quality food, without overfeeding!”

Our enthusiastic appetites don’t mean we need another handful! Feed a quality koi diet in portions we can finish promptly, adjusting to water temperature and activity. Uneaten food and excess waste put more pressure on water quality and filtration.

👀 “Watch us—we communicate through our behavior!”

Changes in swimming, appetite, breathing, or how we interact can signal a problem. Gasping at the surface, repeatedly rubbing against objects, or becoming unusually withdrawn deserve prompt attention.

A healthy pond takes consistent care. Every water test, filter check, and thoughtful feeding helps us thrive. 🧡

The infamous Kohaku
🐟 The Story of "Lil Sister" – A Koi That Should Have Never Left Japan

Pictured here is "Lil Sister," a remarkable Kohaku that became one of our most treasured koi and ultimately earned Champion honors in competition.

Her story begins in Niigata, Japan—the birthplace of Nishikigoi. In October 2004, the Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake struck the region with devastating force. The earthquake and resulting landslides destroyed homes, damaged breeder facilities, and caused many of the famous mud ponds on the mountainsides to collapse or slide away. The disaster affected nearly every breeder in the area and forced difficult decisions that would shape the future of the hobby.

Because so many mud ponds and breeding facilities were lost, some breeders were forced to sell koi that under normal circumstances would have remained in Japan as future broodstock.

Lil Sister was one of those special fish.

She possessed the qualities breeders dream about in a Kohaku: exceptionally clean shiroji (white skin), deep and rich beni (red pigmentation), tremendous body conformation, and the kind of presence that immediately commands attention. Many believed she had the potential to become an important breeding fish.

Fortunately for us, a small group of these extraordinary koi made their way to the United States following the disaster. Lil Sister eventually became part of our collection and quickly established herself as our prized possession.

As she matured, her beauty continued to improve. Her powerful frame, snow-white skin, and thick, lacquer-like beni made her stand out wherever she was shown. She ultimately earned Champion recognition and became a fish that visitors always remembered.

Today, Lil Sister represents more than just a beautiful Kohaku. She is a living reminder of a pivotal moment in koi history—a time when a natural disaster changed the future of many famous koi farms and unexpectedly allowed a few truly exceptional koi to find new homes around the world.

Some koi are beautiful.

Some koi are champions.

And a rare few become part of koi history.

Historical Note:
The earthquake occurred in October 2004, and many of the koi movements and sales occurred during the recovery period that followed into 2005, which is likely why many hobbyists remember it as the "2005 earthquake period."
