I love me a national food day. Today October 26 is National Chicken Fried steak day. Don’t be confused by the days name, there is no chicken in the dish. It gets its name because of the way it’s prepared.
The dish was created in Texas by German and Austrian immigrants in the 19th Century. They reimagined Wiener Schnitzel by replacing the veal with beef. Then breading and frying it southern style.
Growing up in the south, this was a staple. Of course my granny made the best. She could also fry chicken that was delicious. Actually anything that came out of that cast-iron pan was a treat for the tastebuds. She served that crunchy battery masterpiece along with mashed potatoes, smothered in white gravy. Of course we had our veggies - southern green beans. Not sure how healthy they were though. They would be cooking on the stove all day boiling with a big chunk of ham hock giving the beans a real salty goodness. Fresh cornbread was served too. We washed it all down with sweet tea.
If you think this sounds like a meal at Cracker Barrell you would not be too far off. To me, it was just a Sunday at Granny’s. Although when I’m feeling particularly nostalgic a quick trip to Cracker Barrel does the trick.
Hopefully you’re able to enjoy some delicious country fried steak today.
Stay kind my friends. Remember follow, like, and share.
