Is your deck ready? 🔨

Before the next cookout, take 10 minutes to check these 4 things:

✅ Water damage. Look for soft spots, rotted boards, and rusty fasteners, especially around the posts.
✅ Handrails. Give them a firm push. They shouldn’t wobble.
✅ Bracing. Your deck shouldn’t sway or shift when you walk on it.
✅ Ledger board and flashing. This is where your deck attaches to your house, and it’s the most important spot to get right.

Not every deck renovation means starting over. 🛠️
At the Hawke residence, Cornerstone Decks & Additions completed a significant repair and renovation while keeping the original structure, decking and stairs. The existing hand railing needed replacement—and the way it had been constructed called for a different top rail design.
In this project walkthrough, contractor John Pilkington explains how we used a wider top rail to properly cover the existing cap pieces and sleeves, creating a clean, finished result.
Sometimes the craftsmanship is in knowing what to keep, what to repair and how to make the new work with the existing.
