22 minutes of remodeling our basement apartment from start to finish! ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Our house already had a basement apartment, but we wanted to make it smaller so we could use part of the basement ourselves.

I started by building a wall to separate the two spaces and moving some lighting around.

Then things got interesting ๐Ÿ˜‚

I needed to add a bathroom to the apartment and thought I had found an existing toilet drain. Turns out it was actually a radon vent.

So I changed plans and turned an old closet into a full bathroom. Jackhammered the concrete, ran new plumbing, built a shower, installed a toilet and vanity, and finished everything off.

I also added laundry, updated the kitchen, vented the microwave outside, installed new lighting and tackled a bunch of other projects throughout the apartment.

This was a LOT of work, but now we have a separate basement rental and got back a big section of the basement for ourselves.

Iโ€™ve shared most of these projects individually, but hereโ€™s the entire transformation in one video.

Grab a drink and enjoy the full renovation! ๐Ÿฟ

Start to finish: Replacing my front door ๐Ÿ‘Œ

I found a new door that fit the existing opening perfectly, but completely changed the look of the entryway.

The old setup had a window above the door and sidelights on both sides. The new one has a full-height door with taller sidelights, and I love that the windows are high enough that I donโ€™t feel like I need to tint them.

Getting the old door out was a little more work than expected ๐Ÿ˜‚ Then I recruited a couple buddies to help lift the new one into place.

Finished everything off with new brick moulding, white Craftsman trim and black exterior caulk.

I got a pretty good deal on this Steveโ€™s & Sons door from Home Depot, and I couldnโ€™t be happier with how it turned out!

What do you think of the new door?

Itโ€™s not like this was heavy or anything ๐Ÿ˜…

Battling this 36โ€x42โ€ RTA cabinet, I won.

Another cabinet going up in the laundry room!

This time I assembled and installed one of the 36โ€ x 42โ€ Hampton Bay Avondale cabinets from Home Depot.

Iโ€™ve built quite a few RTA cabinets over the years, and these are definitely easier to put together than some of the others Iโ€™ve used.

And Iโ€™m still loving this Fern Green color ๐Ÿ‘Œ

A few more to go!

This cabinet was a beast!

Finally getting started on the laundry room cabinets.

I went with Hampton Bay Avondale RTA cabinets from Home Depot in Fern Green. Iโ€™m loving this color already ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Started with the big 36โ€ wide x 96โ€ tall pantry cabinet. Had to assemble it in the entryway, then recruit my wife to help carry it into the laundry room and tip it into place ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ˜‚

One cabinet down, a few more to go!

What do you think of the green?

Itโ€™s been WAY too long without laundry ๐Ÿ˜‚

Finally got the washer and dryer hooked back up, and my wife is pretty happy about it!

I just wish I could get them closer to the wall. Really wish this laundry room had a recessed dryer vent box.

And of course, I got everything hooked back up just in time for the washer and dryer to be in my way when I start installing the new cabinets ๐Ÿ˜‚

Oh well, at least we can do laundry again!

Getting the entryway ready for the new wainscoting ๐Ÿ‘Œ

I had quite a bit of drywall to patch where the old wainscoting and crown moulding used to be.

A couple coats of mud and some sanding later, the walls are looking a lot better.

Not the most exciting part of a renovation, but it has to be done ๐Ÿ˜‚

Next up, new wainscoting and paint!

Hereโ€™s the trim I use throughout my house. I get asked about the dimensions all the time.

Nothing fancy, just simple Craftsman-style trim. With how expensive trim is, I donโ€™t see a reason to go crazy with it.

Header: 3/4โ€ ร— 5-1/2โ€
Casing: 9/16โ€ ร— 3-1/2โ€
Base: 9/16โ€ ร— 5-1/4โ€

I needed to get the washer and dryer hooked back up, so it was time to finish the trim behind them.

I started by cutting the baseboard to fit around the dryer duct, then installed everything, puddied the nail holes, caulked and finished it off with Chantilly Lace to match the rest of the house.

Iโ€™m still waiting on my RTA cabinets, so I canโ€™t trim the entire laundry room yet.

But the important part is doneโ€ฆ my wife will be happy we can finally get the washer and dryer back ๐Ÿ˜‚

Finished trimming out the inside of the new front door!

I went with the same Craftsman-style trim Iโ€™m using throughout the house. I painted everything before installing it so I could get a nice clean edge against the black door, then nailed it up, puddied the holes and caulked everything.

I still need to touch up the paint where I puddied, but Iโ€™m calling this door done.

I love how it turned out.

Now onto the rest of the entryway and laundry room trim + wainscoting!
