Some native plants have really interesting names, and I find it fun to think of plants for themed gardens. If you wanted to make a spooky native garden, what would you put in it? Here's my list so far:

Skullcaps
Spider milkweed
Spiderwort
Witchhazel
Cats claw
Boneset
Water horehound
Raven's foot sedge
Mist flower
Devil's walking stick
Bloodroot
Doll's eyes
Ghost pipe

I feel like you'd really need some asters and goldenrod in a spooky garden, but I fail to think of spooky named ones...

We have been noticing a lot of butterflies this month! They are loving the asters.

We have one more sale this fall - come shop for native plants next Sunday, October 18, at the Bring Conservation Home Expo at Tower Grove Park from 10-2.

What are your love/hate relationship plants? I'm in a serious love/hate relationship with this one, Bidens polylepis - bearded beggarticks. It is a fast growing annual that wants to be everywhere - anywhere there is a gap or disturbance, there it will be. It grows tallish and fills quite the space. A front yard plant? Probably not, though that's where ours has decided to be đŸ˜‚. Most of the year it earns no loving words from me. But this time of year... I feel I've been way too harsh. So full of pollinators and life, like summer's last hurrah.

Our containers are definitely unique! There are challenges and advantages to our cone-tainers - we really couldn't do what we do in our small city backyard if not for the efficient use of space. And most of our plants really appreciate the extra root space - these cones offer about 2 more inches of space than your standard quart square container. I often say that it is a shame customers don't see the roots, since that's the most important part of a nursery plant.

Try us out! We have several sales coming up. Hope to see you there!

Since "blazing stars" seem to be the theme of the day, here is a beautiful rough blazing star (also known as button blazing star), Liatris aspera. This plant is drought tolerant, and doesn't seem to mind the heat wave.

We are taking the weekend off, but you can find us in TWO places next weekend. On Friday we are at the Shaw Nature Reserve native plant sale; on Saturday we are at The Nature Institute. Feel free to pre-order through the website or by email.
