Any advanced gardening IG & FB friends? Master gardeners, botanists, homesteaders? We love you! And we want to learn more about your garden secrets! 😍 We are creating a brand new blog experience on our Permaculture Garden website (www.growmyownfood.com) and we want it to reflect (3) three tiers of gardening know-how.

The first level, we are calling, "The Apprentice Gardener!"
The second level is "The Accomplished Gardener!"
And the third level is "The Advanced Gardener!"

If you can think of a better word (preferably beginning with "A") that encompasses the ideals of the homesteader, zero-waster, and one who lives a simpler life after having gardened or farmed for many years, please comment below.

And please comment below if you already are an "Advanced Gardener," aspire to be one and have a great idea for an advanced gardening blog!

In the end, all gardeners, especially advanced ones, realize that we are all of us... beginning gardeners.

Because the garden is so vast, so deep and so mysterious that we find how tiny yet how powerful we are in a garden.

Some topics we already have for the Advanced Gardener are:

Organic Gardening on a Budget (maybe because as excited newbie gardeners we might over-purchase our materials?) -
www.growmyownfood.com/organic-gardening-on-a-budget/

The Medicinal Herb Garden (we start to realize that we can actually heal ourselves from the garden!) -

Meditation Gardens (in the garden we come to discover God, the Creator) -

A while back I did a post on a zero-waste laundry soap alternative. Well, I got my soapberry seeds from @tradewindsfruit and will wait to see if I can grow this Himalayan tree indoors in America.

Basically, I am starting these lovely seed balls in my 1020 seed starter tray and simply pushing them down into the soil as deep as they are large

To what purpose? The Sapindus saponaria fruits aka "soap berries" will hopefully be the way I can get laundry detergent for free!

Since I am a permie, I am all about creating cyclical economies, especially in my home. I am always asking, how can I NOT buy this or that product, but make it myself. Or use this instead.

Do you have any zero-waste alternatives that have worked for you? Some of my friends, use Castille Soap + Washing Soda to make their laundry detergents and they can compost the containers of those.

I'd love to hear what tips you have for me to try to make my home zero-waste. Especially if they are solutions that come from the garden.

The road to @vabf conference is always an exciting journey for us flanked by scenes such as these. They remind us how precious and important knowing who your farmer is.

@vabf we actually get to meet these farmers up close and personal. The most beautiful blessing of all is that we learn from them. This year, the conference has a children's program and you bet our kids are coming along to soak it all in!

Talks I'm hoping to attend this weekend:

Community Food Forests: Do's Dont's and Deliverables by John Munsell
The 101 of Edible Landscaping by Michael McConkey
Beyond Zinnias: The Next Level of Flowers to Add to Your Farm - Gwynn Hamilton
The Whole Okra: A Seed to Stem Celebration by Chris Smith
Making a Garden Map by Cindy Conner
Designing & Implementing A Children's Teaching Garden by @mountainrunpermaculture - (can't wait to meet these folks!)
&
Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms - Mark Jones

In case you're wondering how the process of harvesting peanuts looks like...

A legume is a plant that comes with its very own friendly root bacteria. These bacteria are great in helping fix nitrogen in the air to a usable form that the plant can use and uptake. And that is why legume, like peanuts are one of the easiest things to grow.

These are peanuts that we harvested in the fall!

Surprisingly one of the easiest plants to grow because they are legumes. The neat thing about them is seeing the pods under a ton of green growth.

Even though some of the kids have peanut allergies they got a kick out seeing these.

According to @bakerscreekseeds, these are Manpukuji carrots which are descended from the ancient Japanese long carrot types of the Edo period. ... Traditionally served as ‘Namasu’ (grated carrot salad) for Japanese New Year celebrations."

Unfortunately, our clay soil must have been too dense because they didn't grow too long for us. Nevertheless, their deliciousness was gobbled up raw yesterday by the whole fam.

behind it is our daikon. Both of these are going into a pickled carrot and radish recipe that hubby Dave is making today!

Source: @nytcooking

Time: 45 minutes

1. To make the pickled vegetables: In a bowl, toss together the carrots, cucumbers, daikon, vinegar, sugar, and salt and let stand at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, make the pork. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise,

1 tablespoon scallions and 1 to 2 tablespoons chili sauce, to taste. Cover tightly and set aside.

3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the remaining 3 tablespoons scallions and the garlic. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add pork and cook, breaking up with a fork, until no longer pink, 7 to 10 minutes. Stir in 1 tablespoon chili sauce and the fish sauce, pepper, salt, and sugar. Remove from heat and stir in the basil, lime zest, and lime juice. Let cool 5 minutes, then add mayonnaise mixture.

4. Fill bread with pork mixture. Press the jalapeño, mint and cilantro sprigs into the pork. Spoon some pickled vegetables onto the sandwiches and serve any extra alongside.

Yield: 6 servings.

Quick translation of the Filipipno Christmas Carol "Payapang Daigdig" (Peaceful World)

Ang gabing payapa (O peaceful night)
Lahat ay tahimik (When everything was silent)
Pati mga tala (Even the stars)
Sa bughaw na langit (In the blue sky)

Kay hinhin ng hangin (How gentle the breeze)
Wari'y umiibig (that lovingly embraces)
Sa sangkatauhan (humankind)
Ng buong daigdig

Payapang panahon (O peaceful time)
Ay diwa ng buhay (The spirt of life)
Biyaya ng Diyos (The gift of God)
Sa sangkatauhan (To the human race)

Ang gabing payapa
Lahat ay tahimik

Our Story

WE GROW TO FEED OUR FAMILY

We began changing the way we ate after our first two kids developed severe food allergies. We soon discovered that the most nutrient-dense, most organic, tastiest fruits and veggies were the ones we could grow ourselves.

6 years and many mistakes later, we manage to supplement 25% of our food from growing in our small townhouse. We currently grow 235 lbs/year on 1/40th of an acre! If we can do it, you can too!

WE GROW TO CHANGE THE WORLD

Permaculture designer, Geoff Lawton likes to say, “All the problems of the world can be solved in a garden.”

We’ve found this to be true time and again as we build a community of growers online through our GIY program and offline through the after school club we run called, “Sprouts.”

We were once banned by our HOA from growing in our front yard. We’ve made some heading in our neighborhood as well and we tell that story HERE.

WE GROW FOR SPIRITUAL REASONS

Every garden for us is an opportunity to find God and an opportunity to restore Paradise.

“More in a garden grows, than the gardener knows.” – Anonymous

“Gardening symbolizes our race’s primordial acceptance of a responsibility and role in rectifying the harm done to the creation through sin.” – Vigen Guiroian

WE GROW TO BE HAPPY

We are a very positive family and we love helping other families grow because it makes us happy.

We celebrate YOU landing on our page! Yay! You found us!

Now we can’t wait to meet you online or in person. So sign-up for our webinar and tell us more about why you grow.

I've started Pak Choi, bush beans, sweet peas, snow peas, sweet basil, 3 types of parsley, cantaloupe, bell peppers, and different types of hot peppers, all started indoors this past week, I still have 4 flats to finish filling indoors. Can't wait till I can plant my root crops outside, but with snow on the ground it won't be for a while.
If you could choose to grow only 5 plants this year, what would they be? Comment below, so we know!
