🌿 Native Florida Bog Garden Transformation! 🌺💧

Check out one of our latest projects!

At Longleaf Design, we love getting creative, restoring older landscape features, and finding new ways to bring life to the garden!

This 20+ year-old firepit was no longer serving its original purpose, but our client had a much bigger vision for it!

With her property bordering Jonathan Dickinson State Park, much of her surrounding landscape consists of high, dry, sandy soils. While these conditions are wonderful for many of our Florida native plants, our client has always dreamed of creating a space dedicated to Florida’s beautiful wetland and semi-aquatic species.

And what better place than her old firepit?!

Rather than tearing it down, we embraced its character and gave it new life! Our crew cleaned and restored the existing structure, made necessary repairs and reinforcements, installed a water connection for her beautiful bronze mermaid fountain, and transformed the entire feature into a native Florida bog garden!

🌱 Some of the beautiful plants incorporated include:

* Buttonbush
* Yellow Canna
* Blue Flag Iris
* Bacopa
* Blue Sky Flower
* Scarlet Hibiscus
* Swamp Milkweed

These plants now surround the fountain, creating a lush, vibrant wetland-inspired garden that will continue to mature and support local wildlife!

What makes this project especially meaningful is that our client had approached several companies over the years, only to be told to demolish the firepit or replace it with something more modern. But she never gave up on her vision, and we thought the original structure was the perfect fit!

Sometimes the most beautiful gardens aren’t created by starting over, but by seeing the potential in what’s already there. 🌿

A huge shoutout to our hardworking crew, Denis, Justin, and Jon, for putting their hearts into bringing this unique project to life!

We also completed some much-needed corrective pruning on the property’s mango tree, improving sunlight pe*******on, airflow, and its potential for future fruit production. 🥭

We couldn’t be happier to help turn our client’s longtime dream into reality!

It was an absolute honor getting to speak yesterday at Mounts Botanical Garden of Palm Beach County on behalf of Palm Beach County Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and educate on how to properly plant and maintain NATIVE ground cover. Meeting so many people last night was so refreshing to see, it shines the light on how many people really care about helping native Florida and restoring habitat and wildlife here.

Thank you to all who came out, and thank you for having Longleaf Design. We are blessed!

It’s safe to say we are thrilled with this install update! Our client wanted a beautiful view for his wife while she enjoys their swimming pool. And we delivered with LIFE and design in mind! This small space did not hinder us from planting over 15 native species, attracting pollinators all season long. A few natives planted here are Marlberry, Myrsine, Bahama Strongbark, Simpson Stopper, and Firebush as the back drop “privacy hedge”.

And did you catch the Sulphur Caterpillar 🐛 on the Chapman Senna plant? Tons of bees and pollinators swarming over here in this HOA community nook!!

We’re are proud of our work and all the God provides through it. Thank you for entrusting us with your land, either big or small- and if you’re looking to reimagine your outdoor space, you know who to call 📞 !

SWIPE FOR LIFE!!!!! This project had a boatload of contractors in the mix. And it was a blessing to be apart of the “fun”!

LIFE, gorgeous thoughtful and PROPER design and plant knowledge, salt tolerant, erosion control, native, color, edible and tropical…. This project is simply a dream come true in our eyes. This is about one year post install, and keep in mind this property bore the despair of the record breaking freeze this past December and SO much rain, however with our knowledge, proper pruning methods and caring for this property as if it were our own, we still came out on top!

Believe it or not- we’re confident that in a few more months after our plants adapt to their corrective pruning we concluded this week, it will look even BETTER than it is now!

I hope you enjoy this before and after. It’s a blessing and an HONOR to restore native Florida one garden at a time!

This is going to be one of our all time FAVORITE before and after transformations ever shared in Londglesf Design history (check back TOMORROW for a full before & after post!)

Here we have a beautiful house on the St. Lucie River- so they of course called in the plant professionals. With a high importance and knowledge needed on salt tolerant plants, erosion control, and a gorgeous design all in mind- all while working tirelessly alongside a slew of contractors. We DELIVERED!

Instead of synthetic turf, Clusia and colorless hedges. We brought design, life and bio diversity. We understood the assignment 😜

Can’t wait to share a full before and after collection, stay tuned!

I'm Cam Maletto, a landscape designer and plant scientist in Stuart, Florida, and I build native, edible, and tropical landscapes across the Treasure Coast.

My background, so you know who's telling you what to plant. B.S. in plant science from the University of Florida, A.A. in horticulture from Palm Beach State College, trained under an ISA certified arborist, Florida-Friendly landscaping standards, and 14 years growing things in this state. Landscape designer, plant scientist, native plant specialist.

What that buys you is this. When a plant is struggling I can usually tell you why instead of guessing, and I'll tell you straight when something isn't going to work in your spot. Most of my work comes from people calling me back for the next project, which is the only proof I trust.

Longleaf Design does three things and they all fit together.

Native landscapes, built from the plants that grew here before the bulldozers did. They feed the insects, the insects feed the birds, and the yard becomes something alive instead of something you look at.

Edible landscapes. Fruit trees, food gardens, food forests. Mango, avocado, lychee, jaboticaba, and plenty most people don't know grow here. Designed to look like a landscape and not a farm, so you get curb appeal and you get to eat off it.

Tropical gardens, the lush look people move to Florida for, done without the invasive plants that escape into the preserves.

I design them, my crew installs them, and we care for them organically after. No broadcast spraying synthetic pesticides. A planting with enough diversity handles most of its own pest pressure. When something does need a response I go after that one thing instead of spraying the whole yard and killing the good bugs with the bad.

Most yards around here are planted with things that fight our climate and feed nothing. Mine are planted with things that want to be here.

Saving native Florida while making really cool gardens.

Jupiter, Tequesta, Palm Beach Gardens, North Palm Beach, Hobe Sound, Stuart, Palm City, Jensen Beach, Port St. Lucie.

Consultation is $250 and it comes off your design if you move forward. Link in bio.

Now this is a native buffer zone of our dreams! This client entrusted us to render a 3D design and create a gorgeous native buffer zone & privacy hedge instead of throwing up more eurika palms and cookie cutter shaved clusia hedges (if you know us you know that’s our “worst nightmare” 🤪 . Sure there may be a time and place for Clusia, however unfortunately what most clients don’t know is that Florida contractors who are overbuilding quickly & cheaply are blindly throwing Clusia EVERYWHERE. They over grow, take over, are high maintence and can wreak havoc on fence lines, your home and more. They also rip our homes and communities of bio diversity, pollinators and creativity.

A huge part of our business and passion is educating our clients, and ADVOCATING for native Florida. The growth alone here in just under 4 months is absolutely beautiful. Can’t wait to check back in just a few more months to update you on growth! Now let me ask you, what sounds better in your yard: Clusia?

OR:
Marlberry
Firebush
Simpson Stopper
Spanish Stopper
White Stopper
Black Ironwood
Beautyberry
Bahama Strongbark
Dahoon Holly
Myrsine
Wild Coffee
Fiddlewood
Wax Myrtle
Fakahatchee Grass
Chapman Senna
Dune Sunflower
Mistflower
Scorpiontail

If you are wanting to plant a privacy hedge, buffer zone or design your yard with FLORIDA in mind and utilize NO herbicides or pesticides, DM us and we’d love to chat!
