Loved working on this beautiful door in the Strathmore neighborhood! Thank you to my clients for trusting me to refinish the exterior. This included some plywood replacement and hand-repolishing the kick plate back to its original sheen. The older polyurethane was peeling like crazy and the door was extremely sun-worn. Door was scraped, sanded, treated with boiled linseed oil. The final topcoat is many layers of Le Tonkinois Varnish which is linseed oil based. It’s been quite the rainy season and some coats had to be done in place, so this project took a little longer than expected. Big ups to Kassel Co for their help in removing and rehanging the door.

I don’t normally do doors, but this Ward Wellington Ward spoke to me! (I also own a WWW home) The homeowners reached out to me last year to schedule, so we got a plan going - and I think it turned out beautifully so far. The door was very dry and worn as a result of years of abuse from the elements. The polyurethane someone added was peeling like a bad sunburn. After being scraped and sanded to bare wood, this door was brought back to a gorgeous color with boiled linseed oil and balsam turpentine alone. It isn’t finished yet - will be getting additional coats of long-lasting le tonkinois marine varnish to protect it against the elements. The tarnished bronze kickplate was polished to a mirror finish. And yes, the numbers will return as soon as I’m done with it!

Big thanks to the Preservation League of NYS, the Jenrette Foundation, and Cornell AAP for putting together today’s meeting - which focused on presenting research conducted on the preservation trades in NYS and their positive impacts on the economy. We need more people in the trades!

It was a pleasure to teach window glazing to Construction Management students from the Syracuse STEAM school. They were eager to learn, asked a lot of insightful questions regarding old windows, and did a great job glazing. The event was hosted at the Mansion on James street in conjunction with . Would love to host glazing classes in Syracuse for homeowners ❤️🪟💅 big thanks to .us for lending me his petite double hung window display - and another big thanks to + Joel for making paint-free baby sashes for the students to glaze on!

Thank you to my clients in Port Gibson for this job, and thank you for referring me. This beautiful little church is full of restored grisaille-style stained glass. I was brought in to work on their “newer” kitchen windows. (Newer in comparison to the stained glass)… these windows weren’t in terrible shape, but were over painted and not fully functional. They had asked to get their window stools in better shape - they were worn by the weather, any topcoat degraded or peeling. Windows and jambs were fully stripped and re-done. Hardware cleaned. Stools were refinished, coated with ~6 coats of LE TONKINOIS linseed oil based marine varnish. To reduce its glossyness, the top coat was mixed with “gelomat” - gelomat is an additive that mattes the varnish. (The photos do not reflect the matte finish as the gelomat was just applied) The interior stops were coated with many coats of shellac. I’m happy with the results, this church group can move back in and start cooking meals again. ❤️🪟🪟🪟🪟🪟 if you’re ever passing through Port Gibson, you need to check out United Methodist’s stained glass, it is truly one of a kind.

Can you believe these were covered in paint and rust? Lots of pulley clean-up happening here 😊 the scalloped edge pulleys had a nice dip in boiled linseed oil to prevent rust from returning. Very cool “Rockford Mapolite” pulleys from a church kitchen!

WEATHERSTRIPPING MARATHON COMPLETE 🫡 I am still in Salt Lake City working with Restoration West on many things, which I will definitely be sharing. For the past few days I’ve been tasked with adding spring bronze and v bronze weatherstripping to 18 openings at a residence - most of which were casement windows. These photos do not do justice to how beautiful the bronze looks - and also how well it seals. Anywho, I’ll be back in CNY soon to work on all of your windows!
