Collins, Gideon begin an all-out campaign for senate seat

During the tight Senate race in Maine, Senator Collins stops at the Jotul plant. "And I’m very proud that Jotul is developing technology to produce the cleanest burning wood stove ever, ever, and will be developing that here in Maine,” said Collins. Gideon, her Democratic opponent, says Collins looks out for "the interests of the President" more than Mainers.

In a press release, Gideon proposed holding 5 televised debates. Collins told reporters that wasn’t enough, suggested they hold 16 debates - 1 in each Maine county

Analysis | The Energy 202: Biden pleases some once leery liberals with new climate plan

Biden's new plan calls for the electricity sector to be 100% renewable by 2035. "Similar standards have proved to be politically viable at the state level. A majority of states — including several conservative ones such as Montana, Iowa and Texas — have imposed their own renewable energy requirements on local utilities. But no standard exists at the federal level. Biden also proposed upgrading 4 million buildings and weatherizing 2 million homes over four years, which his campaign estimates would create 1 million jobs. Homeowners would be given cash rebates to upgrade home appliances and install more efficient windows." Based on the mainstreaming of the BTU Act in recent legislation, that ramps up biomass stove and boiler incentives to 30% of cost, Biden's plan would likely include that as well.

The former vice president's plan would put the United States on a 15-year timeline for eliminating greenhouse gas pollution from power plants.

State opposes EPA on wood furnace rules

Lamppa Manufacturing is hoping to get a second wood furnace, the Vapor Fire 200, certified later this year. With the new rules in place, Horihan said the 200 model could significantly expand the company’s market share, and is less expensive than the Vapor Fire 100. However, the testing lab has been backlogged with wood furnaces that other companies are currently testing in hopes of meeting the new emissions standard.

REGIONAL— The state of Minnesota has taken a strong stand against a proposal by the Trump administration to allow the continued sale of inefficient and polluting wood furnaces past a deadline …

Pellet Industry Remains Positioned to Deliver | Biomassmagazine.com

For now, the biggest risk facing the wood pellet sector is the availability of wood fiber. As sawmills, pallet operations and flooring manufacturers throttle back to match their own demand turn downs, their chip and sawdust output slows. As surprising as it may sound, there are also some wood pellet producers with access to more fiber than they can currently use.

Next fall, people will need to heat their homes, regardless of the pandemic. So long as the upstream forest products manufacturing sector recovers and generates the fiber wood pellet producers rely on, the industry will be ready and able to supply.

HPBA's lawsuit is now about just one particular aspect of the 2015 NSPS: that EPA’s "imposition of compliance audit testing, while declining to address and accommodate testing imprecision, is arbitrary, capricious and an abuse of discretion. This is their brief. When the EPA, states and others respond, we will also post their briefs.

Outdoor Wood Boiler Lives Matter. Really?

Our Board of Directors and Board of Advisors discussed at length whether we should speak up about a marketing email that we found offensive. We ended up having a long, fascinating discussion about using politically charged phrases to sell products to demographics who may agree with a phrase, quip or joke. I made the call, and we posted this short blog about it. Do you think AGH should ignore or address things like this in our commmunity?

Future demand for firewood in Ballarat region needs to be addressed, says DELWP

In Australia, there is an increase in firewood collecting, connected to hardship experienced due to COVID. With demand for wood growing rapidly, government departments are continually assessing impact on supply, and on the environment. "Basically, there is a question about sustainability there, with increasing population and increasing demand," he said.

Our increasing demand for firewood in the Ballarat region will need serious study, says DELWP.

A pretty well-done overview of fireplace and stove options, with a couple glaring mistakes. And some nice photos!

In early America, fireplaces served as the hub of family life, providing fires for cooking and baking, as well as a warm place to gather, relax, read, and entertain. And the wood-burning fireplace was the primary source of a home’s heat. In fact, according to U.S. Census Bureau survey statistics, ...

Air Conditioned Village

Its probably no coincidence that when the national percent of wood heating was plummeting in the 1950s, central air conditioning in homes was just being invented. Air conditioning was a luxury that was only found in commercial business settings. The novel idea of it in a residential setting involved a year-long series of construction method tests and social experiments with technologies such as radiant barriers, white roofing, shading, vented gables, attic fans, and new insulation materials. You can still visit the original retrofitted homes that have not been changed.

This unassuming North Austin neighborhood was built to test the novel idea of home air conditioning.

Wood heaters too dirty to sell are clean enough to give to tribes, says EPA

AGH supports this program to donate Step 1 stoves in part because it involves removing far dirtier stoves first. Claiming these stove "donations could force more pollution on already vulnerable populations" is not backed up. Institutional poverty and racism are in play here, but this helps alleviate it, not make it worse.

Stoves that produce pollutants known to make people sick can be donated to tribes and Appalachian communities

AIR POLLUTION: Calif. takes strict stance on wood stove regs

"California regulators, taking a harder line than their counterparts at EPA, are bluntly warning wood stove retailers against continuing to sell models that don't meet stricter federal emissions standards.

As of May 16, the sale of such dirtier-burning "Step 1" models is illegal, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra's office said in letters sent yesterday to almost 20 big box and home improvement stores as well as internet retailers.

Becerra, a Democrat, was writing on behalf of the California Air Resources Board.

"To avoid the need for CARB to pursue legal action, please confirm by June 24 that you have ceased advertising and selling these models," he wrote.

That sharply worded message contrasts to the weaker signal sent by EPA officials as they pursue plans to temporarily allow the legal sale of the Step 1 appliances through November. Finalization of that plan is months away; in the meantime, EPA is making enforcement of the newly implemented stricter standards a low priority, according to the text.

The Obama-era EPA had issued the stricter standards for new stoves and other wood-fired home heating appliances in 2015, accompanied by a two-stage compliance schedule. The final Step 2 standards took effect last month; EPA is now proposing the grace period on the grounds that lockdowns related to the COVID-19 outbreak hindered retailers from unloading their remaining Step 1 models before the mid-May deadline.

The Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association, an industry trade group, had already reminded its members last month that the sale of the Step 1 stoves is now illegal and encouraged them to participate in a donation program. In a separate letter to the association yesterday, the California attorney general's office urged the group to further alert companies "to the serious penalties they may face, from entities other than U.S. EPA, for illegal Step 1 device sales in the interim."

In a statement this morning, Jack Goldman, the association's president and CEO, said the group was gratified by California's recognition "of our efforts to educate industry on what we have always understood and explained to be absolute restrictions that took effect" last month. The association has no position on the state's enforcement posture, Goldman added, but will notify other California retailers of the enforcement warning.

California regulators, taking a harder line than their counterparts at EPA, are bluntly warning wood stove retailers against continuing to sell models that don't meet stricter federal emissions standards.

'Like having a truck idling in your living room': the toxic cost of wood-fired heaters

Despite the headline, this is a well-reported article with important policy discussions. Points we found interesting:
* 10% of Australian households use wood as their main source of heating
* 40,000-50,000 wood stoves are sold in Australia each year.
* A New Zealand study on five stoves installed in homes recorded PM levels 15 times higher than their predicted average from lab testing.
* Financial incentives for electric heaters in one area led to 40% reduction in wintertime PM.

Following this, wood heater prevalence fell from 66% to 30% of all households,

Australians choked through a smoke-ridden summer during the bushfire crisis. But many of us are unaware of the silent damage indoor wood fire heaters are doing to our health.

"The county has broken a record for the number of clean air days over the winter dating back to January of 2018. That's because there have been stricter wood stove regulations passed both locally and nationally." We generally support stricter emission regulations, but we doubt that they can produce these results this fast.

With heat building later in the week, we normally would be would expect ozone impacts on air quality. But the sudden drop in vehicles on the road thanks to COVID-19 is keeping the pollution needed for ozone development lower. Thermoelectric Stoves: Ditch the Solar Panels?

"Wood stoves equipped with thermoelectric generators also produce electricity, which can be more sustainable, more reliable and less costly than power from solar panels." Yes ... but ... technology can be finicky, which is one reason why no manufacturer has included it on a certified wood stove that they will warranty. Great article.

Wood stoves can provide a household with thermal energy for cooking and for space and water heating. Wood stoves equipped with thermoelectric generators also produce electricity, which can be more sustainable, more reliable and less costly than power from solar panels.

Introducing the Alliance for Green Heat

We founded the Alliance for Green Heat in 2009 to provide an independent non-profit voice for residential wood and pellet heating. We believe wood and pellet heating has an important energy role in America and has enormous potential in the renewable energy future. We work with federal, state and local agencies as they assess the role of residential wood and pellet heating, how it needs to be regulated and how it can be promoted. Our flagship program, the Wood Stove Design Challenge, is a semi-annual technology competition that seeks to showcase and test next-generation wood and pellet stoves that are far cleaner and more efficient than what is on the market today.

Disappointing to see that outdoor wood boiler and furnace manufacturers are examples of why the NSPS needs to be delayed. They have given wood heating a huge black eye and brought on much more regulatory pressure on wood stove manufacturers. And HPBA still seems to fight for them when far cleaner technology already exists.
Very happy to be presenting at the Wood Pellet Association of Canada today in Ottawa since the country is now guided by solid goals from the Paris climate treaty. Totally different atmosphere here where a carbon tax is underway and prospects are bright for a growing wood pellet market. And still unclear if US pellets will be allowed in Europe since we are pulling out of Paris accord.
