RIP, Tom Stroud, HPBA’s long-time Senior Manager – Codes & Standards, who passed away last week at his home in West Seattle, Washington (not from Coronavirus). Tom was the chair of the ASTM E1602 task group that wrote the masonry heater standard that is now adopted in the IBC and IRC building codes. He was a partner in Dietmeyer, Ward and Stroud, one of the first companies in the Seattle area to build masonry heaters. Starting around 1983, Tom began the ASTM work for masonry heaters. According to Norbert Senf, It was very exciting at the time to exchange information with other practitioners of this obscure new art that had a long history in Europe, but was virtually unknown in North America. Tom was the 3rd President of the Masonry Heater Association before working for HPBA. AGH extends our thoughts and prayers to his family and everyone who was blessed to know and work with Tom.

Utility-scale renewables top coal in U.S. electricity generation for entire Q1 2020 - Renewable Energy World

Nice to hear some good news during this pandemic! Its even better in Europe with more than 40% of all electricity coming from renewables continent wide, and more than 50% in many countries.

For the second month in a row, and only the third month ever, electricity generation from renewables in the U.S. topped coal-powered generation. The three main utility-scale renewable sources ‒ solar, wind and hydropower ‒ also produced enough power to beat out coal for the first time on a quart...

Scammers are trying to fool stove retailers into taking out loans, rather than going through approved stimulus funding. HPBA has great resources for retailers and vendors who need assistance to stay afloat in these difficult times. Beware of solicitations that look like they are government programs.

Are We Really Running Out of Toilet Paper in the COVID Crisis?

Do you know where your toilet paper comes from? 90% of it is made right here in the US. Attempts to limit purchases have tended to make panic worse in the short-term. Toilet paper demand has historically spiked based on rumors and/or jokes, such as the 1973 panic caused by a Johnny Carson monologue.

Is the TP shortage driven by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, or is it simply hoarding behavior that has been witnessed in previous global crises?

Yukonomist: Don’t be that person - Yukon News

A lot of rural rugged individualists heat with wood and help out in their communities. But don't be the person who scoffs at scientic advice about Covid-19. Help slow the spread by social distancing.

Back in the Yukon’s early days, visitors were often astonished at how community-minded all the rugged individualists were. Theft was rare, cabins were left unlocked with gold pokes on the table, and food caches lay untouched along major trails. Miners carried mail for each other, lent boats and he...

Why Vermonters are stoked about Automated Wood Heat.
• Science museum: “It benefits the local economy.”
• Bike shop owner: “It is super convenient for our business and reduces our carbon footprint.”
• Energy committee member: “It keeps my heating dollars local.”
• Arts center director: “It’s saved us thousands of dollars and is environmentally friendly.”

By getting good stories into the world ahead of negative messaging, we can show environmentalists that wood is a heating option they can feel great about.

The Census Bureau is now counting every American, as it does every 10 years. There used to be a long form that asked you about your heating fuel, offering options of wood, coal, solar but not pellets. Instead of a long form every 10 years, the Census does annual surveys of about 3.5 million homes. If asked in coming years, make sure to check the "wood" box if most of your heat comes from a wood or pellet stove, boiler or furnace. We need to ve counted! https://www.census.gov/acs/www/about/why-we-ask-each-question/heating/

Why Many Old Steam Heating Systems Are Oversized

An excellent history of the 1918 Spanish influenza as told by Dan Holohan and how it led to oversizing of heating systems all over America. People became deathly afraid of the air in their homes and their workplaces, leading to the "Fresh Air Movement" and engineers who specified boilers and radiators that were large enough to heat the building on the coldest day of the year, with the windows open.

In this video, Dan Holohan shares why many old steam-heating systems are oversized. The Spanish Influenza pandemic of 1918-19 had a huge impact on the develo...

EPA finalizes amendments to 2015 NSPS for wood heating appliances | Biomassmagazine.com

The Pellet Fuel Institute says the final EPA rules show that "over five year effort to have our voices and arguments heard" by the EPA and resulted in this important regulatory victory. AGH President John Ackerly said that while the final rule strikes a good balance, the EPA should have issued it at least a year ago.

The U.S. EPA on March 11 finalized amendments to the 2015 NSPS for residential wood heating appliances. The amendments remove the minimum requirements for pellet fuel and clarify a requirement regarding the use of unseasoned wood to make pellets.

Congrats to Napoleon for winning best of the show in the 2020 Vesta Award for their forthcoming Eco Smart Stove. The stove has an optical sensor that monitors particulate matter and can continually adjust air settings to produce a cleaner burn. According to Napoleon, the automation will only add $300 to the price of the stove and they expect the complete system with stove to retail for about $2,500. It also connects to the Napoleon cloud via your smart phone so you can monitor combustion conditions and adjust the stove. The user can also allow the company to log data from the stove, providing a valuable record of how the stove runs.

Introducing the Alliance for Green Heat

We founded the Alliance for Green Heat in 2009 to provide an independent non-profit voice for residential wood and pellet heating. We believe wood and pellet heating has an important energy role in America and has enormous potential in the renewable energy future. We work with federal, state and local agencies as they assess the role of residential wood and pellet heating, how it needs to be regulated and how it can be promoted. Our flagship program, the Wood Stove Design Challenge, is a semi-annual technology competition that seeks to showcase and test next-generation wood and pellet stoves that are far cleaner and more efficient than what is on the market today.

What outdoor boilers are we having good luck with? We don't get many calls for these here in Delaware. . .
I am looking for a rating system for energy efficient wood/coal boilers
Disappointing to see that outdoor wood boiler and furnace manufacturers are examples of why the NSPS needs to be delayed. They have given wood heating a huge black eye and brought on much more regulatory pressure on wood stove manufacturers. And HPBA still seems to fight for them when far cleaner technology already exists.
Very happy to be presenting at the Wood Pellet Association of Canada today in Ottawa since the country is now guided by solid goals from the Paris climate treaty. Totally different atmosphere here where a carbon tax is underway and prospects are bright for a growing wood pellet market. And still unclear if US pellets will be allowed in Europe since we are pulling out of Paris accord.
