The Tangled Web of Calendula Farm & Earthworks

At our core we are plant-loving, dirt worshipping, tree-hugging artists and general contractors with an intense passion for growing plants and creating gorgeous & functional outdoor living spaces for other humans to enjoy. Here at Calendula Farm & Earthworks, we follow our passions and we like to share the results in hope that we are contributing to a more peaceful and beautiful world. We acknowledge that Calendula Farm and Earthworks exists on and does its business on the traditional lands of the Puyallup People. The Puyallup people have lived on this land since the beginning of time and we gratefully acknowledge their stewardship, grieve their forced removal, and honor their continued fight to live on their ancestral lands. We affirm our responsibility to stand with the Puyallup Tribe of Indians and do everything we can to protect their land and culture from further encroachment and destruction. Here is a link to a video - Puyallup Tribal Lushootseed Land Acknowledgement https://youtu.be/KGnac8x-SIM

Currently, we focus on offering:
Potted nursery stock for landscapes and home gardens
Landscape construction - from small gardens to whole yard makeovers
Production of flowers and other botanicals for dried arrangements and decor
Skincare products made from traditional herbs grown and processed on our farm

In the nursery, we specialize in plants that produce food or are used in traditional medicines and also grow an extensive selection of ornamental flowering perennials, shrubs, and trees. We use these plants in our landscaping projects and sell them at the Proctor Farmers’ Market on Saturdays in Tacoma. We grow plants that are best suited to the Pacific Northwest climate and range from garden variety Blueberries & Raspberries to unusual, old-fashioned, or hard-to-find plants like Wasabi, Carnations, Marshmallow, and Crape Myrtle. We are general contractors (licensed, bonded, insured # CC CALENLN883RE) specializing in anything that contributes to artful outdoor living. Whether you are interested in a space for entertaining, a cut flower garden, a food forest, improved curb appeal, or a peaceful, private sanctuary where you can retreat from a too-busy world, we build creative spaces to suit your style. We are particularly passionate about stonework like patios, pathways, walls, and steps and also build wooden arbors, trellises, fences and construct raised planting beds from either wood or stone. Other services include outdoor lighting, irrigation, and drainage solutions. In the fields, we grow a huge selection of flowers, grasses, trees, and shrubs whose blooms, buds, leaves, branches, seeds, and roots we dry or preserve in various ways. These are used in our studio to become seasonal decorations and art. The wreaths, swags, bouquets, and sculptures are permanently dried and preserved and can last for years. Each piece is unique and can range from more or less traditional looking to fanciful and kinda weird. Our fields also produce a number of wild herbs with long histories of use in traditional medicines. We use Calendula, Plantain, Yarrow, Cottonwood Bud, and Comfrey in our line of skincare products that include creams and balms for soothing self-care. We harvest, dry, and infuse these herbs in oil for several months, then create our basic Rejuvenating Cream, Calendula Cream, Soothing Balm, and Arnica Joint & Muscle Balm. Who we are:

Plant of the day!
Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)

The Chamomile most frequently found in seed racks for home gardeners is German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita). It is an annual that irregularly self-seeds and grows to 12-18 inches tall. Our favorite, however, is Roman Chamomile. It is a reliable evergreen perennial and has the same flavor and therapeutic properties as German Chamomile. Actually, we prefer the flavor of Roman Chamomile. It's a little softer, less sharp.

Roman Chamomile is a sweet little 6-8 inch evergreen tuft of fine, feathery foliage year-round and blooms with small yellow and white daisies a few times, spring to autumn. Harvest the blooms just as they are at their peak, let them air dry and store in a sealed jar to preserve the essential oils. It loves full sun to a ½ day of sun and is fine going dry-ish.

It's worth mentioning wild chamomile a.k.a. Pineapple W**d (Matricaria discoidea) here too. It is a common roadside w**d that's happiest growing in compacted gravel pathways and other ridiculously harsh locations. The nice thing about its odd choice of habitat is when you inevitably walk on it you get a blast of fresh fruity, herby aroma.

Chamomiles of all types have a very long history as medicines and are wonderful for calming a speeding brain and promoting restful sleep, aiding digestion, soothing skin irritations, and is anti-inflammatory. The flavor in tea is a distinctive combination of aromatic herby, earthy, grassy, and fruity.

Plant of the day!
Chinese Chrysanthemum a.k.a. 'Gong Ju Hua' (Chrysanthemum morifolium)

You might have come across Chrysanthemum Tea in Asian groceries or health food shops. Here it is. Used in traditional Asian medicine for millennia, the flowers make a lovely tasting and healthful tea. The Chinese name for it, Gong Ju Hua, translates as 'Tribute Chrysanthemum' (for the ancient emperors of China). It is occasionally referred to as the 'flower to resist aging' for its use in nourishing skin, hair, and moderating cholesterol and blood pressure.

The plant grows in full sun to about 2 feet tall in a bushy collection of stems and textured, scalloped leaves. In autumn, sturdy stems shoot above the mound of foliage topped with densely petaled puffy white daisies with soft yellow centers. Harvesting the blooms for tea is typically done in mid November. It is a great addition to your garden for late season flowers.

The plant has been selected from the original Chrysanthemum species for thousands of years and in all that continual selection of specific traits, it no longer produces viable seed. The only way to get more is by dividing the roots or rooting stem cuttings. So when you get one of these, you are literally getting a small piece of the same plant that grew in China centuries ago. That kind of thing makes our plant-geeky heads spin.

Get this and see tons of other beautiful and functional plants year round at our nursery.

Plant of the day!
Astilbe (Astilbe arendsii)

Fierce gardeners know Astilbe and love it for the colorful sparkle it adds to very shady gardens. Beginning gardeners should meet this plant soon if they haven’t been introduced yet. The original species of Astilbe grow wild in mountainous parts of Japan with creamy white plumes of flowers. Another species grows in China with pinkish blooms. In the early 1900’s a German botanist named Georg Arends began fiddling with the two and now the horticulture world is filled with many of his creations which flower in all shades of pinks, purples, reds, and whites. Most varieties these days are named after him - Astilbe arendsii.

History schmistory. What’s so great about Astilbe for you? How about bright plumes of floofy flower color to brighten up a dark shady spot? Or maybe the light delicate foliage that can be deep green or bronzy purple? Or how about the fact that Astilbe just does its beautiful business without much input from you? Astilbe will bloom for a long period from mid spring till summer weather really starts cookin’. It forms a colony of itself that grows a little each year but is not a garden bully. It tends to make companion plants nearby look even better.

Most Astilbes are good with average watering but will also thrive in very moist areas. A rain garden with a shady section is perfect.

Get this and see a huge selection of other shade loving perennials at our nursery.

Plant of the day!
Alaskan Yellow Cedar (Callitropsis nootkatensis)

Here’s a native Northwest tree with an incredibly deep and rich historical association with humans. Here in the Puget Sound area we are familiar with Western Red Cedar which is used in nearly every wood fence you see. That’s because the wood contains so much oil it naturally resists rotting for decades. Further north, from Vancouver Island to Alaska, Western Red Cedar relinquishes its dominance to Alaskan Yellow Cedar. Its wood also contains a lot of oils and can last even longer without decay.

Also known as Weeping Alaska Cedar and Nootka Cypress, it has been used for tools, clothing, and construction material by the Nootka people of Vancouver Island for millennia. Japanese tuna fisherman specify this wood for their lures because of its buoyancy, durability, and color. Contemporary life in the coastal Pacific Northwest includes this tree as a wonderful ornamental urban landscape feature.

As a landscape feature, you have undoubtedly seen these distinctive evergreen trees hugging the sides of buildings. They have a very slender habit with branches that swoop and droop downward as if they just can’t hold up the weight of all the winter rains. They have a very graceful, drippy, perfectly PNW look to them. Their relatively slow growth and very narrow shape means they are the rare tree that can safely be planted close to a building. You get a lot of height without bulk. It is happy in full sun to light shade.

Find these and many other great native trees at our nursery.

Plant of the day!
Camellia 'Juletide' (Camellia sasanqua)

Camellias are a common evergreen leafy landscape feature and flowery seasonal treat here in the Pacific Northwest. Some of them are planted in appropriate locations with space to show off their sort of muscular looking branches & trunk along with their exquisite winter flowers. Sadly, they are often planted too close to a house and look like awkward lumps that require constant work to keep sheared away from the structure. If you’ve seen ones like this, don’t let it be the standard by which you judge all Camellias. Try planting one in a more open spot and you’ll fall in love with it as it becomes more beautiful year after year.

One of these seasonal treats is Camellia ‘Juletide’. Three inch blooms appear in November to December - just in time to add cheerful red color to the Jule season. ‘Juletide’ is a variety of Camellia sasanqua which originated in southern Japan. The sasanqua species is known for simple, more or less flat flowers with a prominent burst of yellow stamens (the male reproductive parts) erupting from the center. ‘Juletide’ flowers are bright christmas red and the yellow tipped stamens look like a cluster of fiber-optic lights in the center. The flowers last about six weeks, then drop & make room for other late winter & spring flowering things to take the stage. It grows to about 8-ish feet in full sun to light shade. Keep the lower branches trimmed off to expose its beautiful sculptural structure.
