THE STORM IS COMING. DOCUMENT NOW. PROTECT YOUR CLAIM.
Before the storm, take clear photos and video of your home, inside and out. Capture your roof from the ground, siding, windows, ceilings, floors, and outbuildings.
Document your personal property, too. Open closets, cabinets, and drawers. Photograph furniture, appliances, electronics, tools, and other valuables, including model and serial numbers. Save receipts and back everything up somewhere you can access if your phone or home is damaged.
After the storm, when it is safe, photograph and video the damage before cleanup or repairs. Take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, and keep receipts for temporary repairs and related expenses.
Promptly report your claim and give your insurance company the opportunity to inspect, investigate, and make its coverage decision. Then contact me to review how your claim was handled and help ensure you have complied with your policy’s post-loss obligations. If you receive a document request or have questions, contact me before a deadline passes.
Be wary of out-of-town contractors who demand cash-only payment or full payment upfront. Verify their license and insurance, get a written contract, and understand what you are signing before paying.
If you pay in cash, get a signed, written receipt showing the amount paid, payment date, work performed, property address, and any remaining balance. Include the contractor’s business name, address, telephone number, license number, and the full name and signature of the person receiving payment. Verify that person’s identification and document whom you paid. Keep these records for submission to your insurance carrier and, if necessary, use in court.
If you have questions about your insurance claim or a contractor’s proposal, contact my office for a free consultation.
