International Pelvic Pain Society

International Pelvic Pain Society Our primary goal is to recruit, organize and educate healthcare professionals who have chronic pelvic pain.
(2)

The IPPS was established in 1996 to educate health care professionals how to manage pelvic pain, thereby changing the lives of patients worldwide. We are a growing group of physicians, physical therapists, and mental health specialists committed to improving the management of pelvic pain syndromes through education, research, and providing the highest quality of evidence-based care.

Mission: The International Pelvic Pain Society was established in 1996 with two primary objectives: *To educate health care professionals how to diagnose and manage chronic pelvic pain, thereby changing the lives of patients worldwide. *To bring hope to men and women who suffer from chronic pelvic pain by significantly raising public awareness and impacting individual lives.

Meet Dr. Erin T. Carey. She serves as the current Treasurer of IPPS. She is also the Division Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery and Assistant Professor Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynecology at UNC Chapel Hill as well as serves as their Fellowship Program Director. Her full quote is a true statement in integrating care for our patients.
"We need to start evaluating women and their pain as a single entity. Too much is lost in both parts when we fractionate them. Caring for the whole patient - mind, body and the interplay between - is the key to managing chronic pain and improving life quality.”

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month. Did you know that cervical cancer is the easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent, with regular screening tests and follow up?

Here is a brief run down:
1. No pap smears until age 21
2. Pap smears every 3 yrs from age 21-29
3. Pap smears plus HPV testing every 5 from age 30-65
4. No need for pap smears over age 65 if you have never had a high grade abnormal pap smear
5. There is an HPV vaccine for people age 12-45 that is FDA approved to prevent the most common causes of cervical precancer/cancer

Call your primary care doctor or gynecologist now to make sure you are up to date on your cervical screening and go to https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/cervical/index.htm for more information.

Amy Stein, PT, DPT represents (IPPS) International Pelvic Pain Society and (NVA) National Vulvodynia Association on patient advocacy and #awareness for #Vulvodynia this week in #Boston. Here is her summary. "On Tuesday and Wednesday, I had the honor of meeting with amazing patient advocates, like Chris Veasley, Sandy Hilton and others from all over the globe, with common goals: To try to clarify what IS #chronicpain and how do we better define “our” #pain with practitioners. To come up with more universal pain scales and tools for #patients and #practitioners, because we all know that the visual analog scale does not tell us much of anything and varies so much person to person. To bridge the gap between patients, providers, the community, research and most importantly with insurance payers, who just don’t have pain. To increase awareness and education in the WORLD on pain and amongst all #healthcare providers. To give patients and practitioners more resources to help guide them through their healing journey. I applaud the courage of the advocates from US Pain Foundation, For Grace, International Pelvic Pain Society, Interstitial Cystitis Association, National Vulvodynia Association, Grünenthalal, and the other groups who attended and continue to help with this journey!
