Our Switchel Story:
I’ve battled digestive issues my whole life. To anyone who’s familiar, you know how disruptive those can be. As a soccer player and collegiate athlete, they made my training and recovery a nightmare. Many foods were out of bounds. And gatorade and coconut water didn’t quite do the trick. I didn’t just need a better way to rehydrate—I needed the perfect drink to help me recover, and keep my gut in check.
I didn’t find that drink until later. After I entered the workforce, I’d use my time outside the PBS newsroom to tinker in my kitchen. I’d brew drinks to help my digestive symptoms—kombuchas, ginger shots, tonics—but nothing worked. Then I found an obscure drink called switchel, and for the first time, my gut felt great!
So I started bringing my switchel to work in mason jars, and my curious coworkers asked to try it. They loved it and raved about how great they felt. So I mixed together a few special orders, and before long, I’d established an underground subscription service with loyal customers, run right out of the newsroom.
Then I sat back one night and said, this is helping people drink in a healthier way. Why not have the guts to start a business? So that’s what I did. And once I began to dig into research, I saw a huge opportunity with switchel.
On January 21, 2018, after hundreds of iterations of recipes, we launched our switchel in stores.
