Rooting DC Volunteer Scheduler

We are still seeking a few more volunteers to help Rooting DC get towards zero waste! If you're available to help on Saturday for ~1hr, please fill in your name and email address at the link. And please forward this announcement to anyone else you think may be interested in helping out.

The forum is at Woodrow Wilson High School, near the Tenleytown metro stop on the red line.

ILSR is collaborating with Sierra Club DC's Zero Waste Committee and Compost Cab to coordinate this waste sorting effort. Because Rooting DC is such an awesome and popular (and free!) event, there's the potential for a significant amount of waste -- but, with your help, we aim to separate all of the recyclables and compostables from the rest of the waste stream. Please help us make this great event even greater.

HU Meal Plan vs. CSA

First off a CSA IS a meal plan. It stands for Community Supported Agriculture and weekly gathers a network of POC and women urban farmers and gardens from around the DMV area for a 12 week meal plan of seasonal food.
You sign up, pick up, eat for a week, and do it again. For perspective let's compare and contrast.

•Both located on Howard's Campus (CSA pick up is off Georgia Ave by the baseball field on Euclid St.)
•HU dining dollars are $200 for the 19 Meal plan
•CSA is $225 to become a 12-week member a week's worth of food.
•Our meal plans (excluding dining dollars) range from $1000 to $2,200 for the cafeteria food
•CSA is a variety of organic and fresh mushrooms, herbs, fruits, and veggies from our local DMV producers.

From squash to watermelon, rosemary to sh*ttake mushroom. Sounds like organic local food isn't too far from campus. :D #supportyourlocalfarmer #supportblackbusiness #womenfarmers

Land, Co-ops, Compost: A Local Food Economy Emerges in Boston's Poorest Neighborhoods

Our vision of HU garden. We want to push toward a sustainable space for students, land to grow on (& of course put back into), create & organize on.

From kitchens that buy and sell locally grown food, to a waste co-op that will return compost to the land, new enterprises are building an integrated food network. It's about local people keeping the wealth of their land at home.
