Question of the day:

So when you're testing.. what are you testing for?

Well-- there are a few things that make a good candle a good candle and all of them can be figured out through testing. The "perfect" candle should first and foremost.. be safe. You don't want a candle that is going to turn into a flamethrower.. or explode. So-- part of testing involves finding the perfect combination of wick and wax and container. Too big a wick-- at best you will have a candle that tunnels... at worst, the temp of the glass will get too high and the container will fail. So-- when safety testing-- we start by burning a candle in 3 hour increments as recommended on the labels. Then-- we do a 12 hour powerburn to make sure the glass can hold up.

Beyond that-- we're looking for a wick that consumes ALL the wax.. without consuming it too quickly. You don't want a lot of hangup along the sides-- that's wasted product. But-- you don't want your "30 hour candle" to be gone in 20 hours, either. We're watching to see how much soot is created by the candle-- we don't like soot (and yes, soy candles can produce soot just as bad as paraffin--no matter what the marketing department tells you). We look for signs that the wick can't handle the fragrance--- our wicks are "self consuming" but if they aren't the right size-- they can either drown out.. or turn into carbon mushrooms-- both which affect the burn. And finally-- we're looking for that fragrance throw. If I light a candle now... how many rooms can smell it in 30 minutes.... in an hour... in 3 hours.

All in all-- each 4oz candle has a good 40 hours or more of testing into the finished product.. and sometimes we will spot test randomly throughout the year if we have reason to believe there has been a formulation change in our wax or fragrances.

I'm obsessive about candles. I'm obsessive about quality. It takes a little longer--- but its SO worth it.

News You Can (and should) Use--

In the winter months-- your packages are sitting on cold trucks and in cold depot stations during the shipping process. When you receive your candles-- please.... PLEASE.. allow your candles to reach room temperature before lighting. We test extensively to ensure our jars withstand temperature extremes... however, we cannot control the weather and its important to take good care when going from extreme colds to extreme heat!
