Dimensions of Human Figure (Adults) 📐
Human scale is the starting point of every design decision - from door widths to counter heights to shelf reach. Before we can plan spaces intelligently, we need to understand the average adult body and the clearances it needs to move, work and function comfortably.
📏 Key Adult Body Dimensions
- Standing height (side & front view): 5'-9"
- Eye level: 5'-9" height, shoulder width: 1'-8"
- Arm span (fully extended): 6'-0" — reach radius 2'-6" to 3'-9"
- Elbow height (standing): 3'-9"
- Shoulder width (front, arms crossed): 1'-8"
- Hip width (side view): 9½"
- Reach with raised arm: 7'-0"
🪑 Functional Clearances
- Counter/Desk clearance (seated to standing): 3'-7" overall, with 11" knee clearance
- Reach clearance at shelves/cabinets: up to 6'-3" total height, top shelf reach 3'-6"
- Arm movement radius (front view): 3'-2"
- Side-arm extended reach: 7'-0", with a 2'-10" working radius
💡 Design Insight:
These anthropometric minimums guide everything from kitchen counter heights to shelving depth and door clearances. As the reference notes, these are minimum requirements — comfortable design should always allow extra clearance for larger-than-average users.
