Ash dieback shows first in the crown. Thinning leaves. Dead tips. Whole branches sat bare while everything else is coming into leaf. Check the bark where branches meet the trunk for diamond-shaped lesions. Dark staining at the base is another giveaway. Once it takes hold the wood goes brittle fast. Big worry if you've got one near a path, drive or boundary. We're seeing it right across Wigan on mature ash. Worst on the wetter clay ground. If yours looks off, Wigan Tree Services will pop out for a free, no-obligation inspection.

Yes, you really can be fined up to £20,000 for felling or heavily pruning a protected tree without permission. Caught a few homeowners round Wigan out already. Got a TPO on your tree? Or sits in a conservation area like parts of Standish or Aspull? You need written consent from the council before any work starts. We always check before lifting a saw. Keeps the risk off you. Not sure what's on your land? Wigan Tree Services will pop out for a free, no-obligation look.

Ask to see their qualifications before any work starts. A properly trained arborist will happily show you their NPTC or City & Guilds tickets for chainsaw use and aerial rescue. Public liability insurance too. Ash dieback is everywhere in Wigan now. We're up in mature sycamore and oak daily. Cut corners on training and people get hurt. Simple as that. A good arborist will also talk you through TPOs and conservation area rules before touching a branch. At Wigan Tree Services we're glad to walk you through ours on a free, no-obligation inspection. Give us a shout.

Tree leaning after the wind? Base soil lifting? Root plate's likely gone and you need it looked at fast. Clay round Wigan holds water like nothing else. After a wet autumn, mature sycamores and limes can let go with barely any warning.

Root rot's trickier. Look for a thinning canopy. Fungal brackets at the base. Small dead branches up top.

Been doing this at Wigan Tree Services over 20 years. Happy to pop out for a free inspection if you're not sure.

Had a tree come down in the garden overnight? Don't go near it if there's any chance it's tangled in wires or leaning on a structure. Ring us. We'll get out for a look.

After the autumn gales through October and November we're usually out non-stop across Wigan. Cutting up windblown sycamore. Chopping oak on sodden ground where the roots have let go. Happens every year.

Wigan Tree Services has been doing this over twenty years. Fully insured. Right across the borough.

Give us a shout for a free inspection and we'll sort it properly.

Can we drop a big sycamore leaning towards the house and the overhead cables? Yes. Not in one piece though. Anything within falling distance of a roof or power line gets sectional dismantling. Climbed or on a MEWP. Piece by piece, lowered down with rigging ropes. Branches near live lines? We ring the DNO first, every time. Never chance it. After the autumn gales round Wigan we see loads of storm-damaged trees on soft, wet ground. Don't leave it. Wigan Tree Services offer a free, no-obligation inspection. Give us a shout.

Yes, we can still tidy your hedges during nesting season. We just have to check them first. From March to August it's an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act to disturb an active nest. So at Wigan Tree Services we walk the hedge. We look for signs of activity. Only the sections clearly unused get cut.

Round Wigan the beech and privet fill up fast. Quieter gardens out towards Standish are the worst for it.

Not sure if yours can be trimmed now? Give us a shout for a free, no-obligation look.

Crown reduction and thinning aren't the same job. Mix them up and mature trees pay for it. A reduction shortens the outer canopy to lower wind sail. Handy before October gales roll in. Thinning's different. You take out selected inner branches so light and air can move through, shape stays the same.

Round Wigan we work on a lot of mature sycamores and limes. Light, targeted cuts. Heavy work just stresses the tree.

Conservation area? TPO on the tree? We'll sort that side of it too.

Wigan Tree Services offer a free inspection whenever you're ready.

Once a tree's down, that stump's not just ugly. It'll send up suckers. Harbours honey fungus. Makes replanting a nightmare. We grind them out well below ground level, usually 6 to 8 inches down, so you can turf over the area, replant, or lay a patio without worry. Clay soils round Wigan? Rotting stumps hold moisture. That pulls in trouble you don't want anywhere near the house. Doesn't matter if it's one awkward sycamore stump or a whole row left after hedge removal. Wigan Tree Services will come take a look for free and tell you what's involved. Give us a shout for a no-obligation inspection.

"How much to take down a tree?" Honest answer: can't say without seeing it. Cost depends on size. Species matters. Access for the chipper is a big one. Is it near buildings? Wires? How do we get the arisings out?

Mature sycamore in a tight Wigan back garden is a completely different job to one with drive access. TPOs and conservation areas in places like Standish? More paperwork on top.

That's why Wigan Tree Services always comes out for a free, no-obligation look before quoting. Give us a shout and we'll take a proper measure.
