Today we lose Nolen. This was his 3rd summer at GLLC and he starts Kettering University next week. Nolen has been an integral part of our operations and while we are sad to lose his help and great attitude, we are absolutely thrilled for him to start the next chapter of his life.
Tomorrow morning the rest of us will feel like empty nesters.

Have an ugly concrete foundation you want to hide? We can help with that. In some cases, a wall can be hidden with climbing plants but that doesn’t work in many applications, such as this one under a deck. Painting is also an option but the surface needs to be cleaned and prepped. There are literally hundreds of choices for stone veneer. This happens to be real natural stone, which is a bit heavier and requires a bonding agent applied over the bare concrete and a good scratch coat.

Our current project. I forgot to take before pics but basically there were crumbling cinder block walls and rickety wood steps. We are replacing with Fondulac natural stone for walls, bluestone steps, and a Unilock Brussels Block patio will go in after we get the walls done. Once the patio is completed, then the fun begins. We are building a custom stone fireplace with wood boxes and an hearth. And once we cleanup and get our stuff gone, I’ll be jealous of their view while they enjoy a crisp fall evening in front of the fireplace.

Madi and I took a break from Landscaping and school to enjoy a bit of ‘Pure Michigan’.
She’s the 4th generation to ride this 86 year old family heirloom. Riding a 1940 Farmall H across the Mackinac Bridge with a group of 1250 other antique tractors was exhilarating. After meeting an old Army buddy for lunch, we had great weather so decided to spend the afternoon on the island eating fudge and seeing the sights.

People often ask me what the crew is planting today. When I answer “nothing, and we haven’t planted anything all week”, it’s because we do a fair amount of hardscape too. This is phase I for this project. A pool is going in right where I’m standing to take this photo and we’ll be back in the spring to install a patio first, then plants. Sometimes days go by and we don’t plant anything, and then we have 3 solid days of it.
And yes, that’s Madi. She and her sister Olivia came home last night from MSU for the holiday weekend and she volunteered to help the crew today. On the way in this morning she confided in me that if she’s going to be a sweaty mess, she would rather be out on a jobsite vs sitting in a lecture hall with sweat rolling down her back.

We lose Madi today for her sophomore year at MSU. Yes, she rides to and from work with me and I see her at home, but I’m spending every minute this afternoon planting ferns with my landscaper buddy. No job is too big or too small for this kid.

Everyone has weird habits. This is Madi. She finds earthworms while planting and puts them in her cargo pocket with some soil and mulch as a treat for her pet ducks at home. Today the worms didn’t make it home. She fed them to a huge bass under the dock at our jobsite.

One last GLLC team cookout before we lose almost half our crew to school. Conner’s last day is tomorrow and could potentially be his last day ever since he starts his senior year at Northern in Marquette next week. We’ll keep a shovel warmed up for him next spring if he hasn’t landed something in his preferred field of study yet.
We lose Madi mid next week to her second year at MSU. Madi has tended to come home more grubby than me most days, if that’s possible. We’ll miss Madi coming up to one of us with her hands cupped to show us a frog or toad she caught at the jobsite. Just about every day that happened.
We have Nolen until the end of September though, so we don’t lose them all at once. Nolen will begin his journey at Kettering University to study Engineering. He’s a sharp kid who will go places but isn’t afraid to get into the trenches and get dirty with the rest of us. He’s also an amazing drummer.
After that Caleb, Jason, Mike, Eric and I will have to pick up the slack from these go getters.

GLLC wishes these hard working kids the best of luck with their studies the coming school year.

As always, our cookout includes our partners Sherri and Olivia at Green Goddess Farms. I’m a landscaper, you want me in your yard not in your kitchen. Sherri and Olivia prepared a feast of GGF produce and meat to include home grown sweet corn, potatoes, green beans, relish, and pork sausage. Thank you GGF!!!

There’s a lot of pics here. People have been asking me to post some pictures of a big project we have been working on all summer. Actually we started last October, but couldn’t resume until late May due to other trades being in our way. We are still working at this site but after this week we will have the majority completed. We still have to build 2 gas fire pits and some minor tweaking, and then once the material comes in we will be doing a stone veneer on the exposed foundation. Then the last thing will be the outdoor kitchen, which is still in the design phase and might be this fall or next spring. We have done some other projects concurrently, but East Gull Lake drive has been our base of operations for weeks.
We did some major earth moving/excavating last October along with field stone boulder seawall, retaining walls, and bluestone steps. The 2500 sqft patio is Unilock Bristol Valley ‘Steel Mountain’ with Unilock Copthorne ‘Steel Blue’ border. Extra parking was achieved by installing Unilock Turfstone that will look like green space once the grass fills in. A complete new irrigation system was installed and we laid sod a couple weeks ago. A concrete path to the lake was added for barrier free access to the boat docks. Many plants including Blushing Pink roses, Tuff Stuff hydrangea, Dianthus, Astilbe, Hellebores, Nepeta, Rozanne Geranium, Sky Pencil Japanese holly, Little Bunny dwf fountain grass, Hibiscus, and many others are highlighted with low volt path and spot lights.
We are currently building vegetable planters out of Unilock Brussels Dimensional in Limestone color that will have Unilock Ledgestone caps.

This is what we can do for you too, however, it would probably be 2027. I’m not sure how much we can fit in yet this year, depending on late fall weather.

On a side note, I have healed from my surgery and am almost back to normal now. A HUGE pat on the back to our crew, who continued to work on this project while I was recovering. Directing traffic from a hospital bed is no fun. I’m so grateful we have such a competent and willing crew.
