Problem: your roof is baking the house. The ceiling is warm to the touch and the bedrooms will not cool down at night.

Why: a dark roof absorbs a large share of the sun's heat all day, then passes it down into the roof space.

The fix:

βœ” Wash the roof, kill the algae, and prime it with the right primer for your roof type
βœ” Apply two coats of Prominent Paints Neuklad Cool Roof, about 60 microns each, 120 microns in total
βœ” Keep it light. Neuklad Cool Roof reflects up to 30% of solar heat, and tinting it darker reduces that
βœ” Paint in the cooler part of the day. A metal roof at midday is too hot to coat properly

Watch the 30-second fix, then ask our team which primer your roof needs. Find your nearest branch using the link below.

Painted the front wall a bold red or a deep yellow, and two summers later it looks tired while the white side wall still looks new? That is not bad paint. It is how colour behaves in South African sun.

Our new article, Colour Is a Performance Decision, is written for the professionals who specify exterior colour, but every homeowner choosing a colour this summer should read it:

βœ” Why lighter colours always outlast darker ones in the same paint. White is the most sun-stable pigment. Reds, oranges and yellows fade first.
βœ” Why a standard factory colour lasts longer than a bold colour mixed at the counter, and what that means for the wall that faces the street.
βœ” Why dark walls crack sooner. They run hotter, so the wall moves more every day and the paint film has to keep up.
βœ” Why bright colours take more coats to cover, and why stretching the tin to save one is the wrong fix.

The short version: keep the sunny walls lighter, save the bold colour for the sheltered stoep or the front door, and put the full two coats on.

Painting outside in October? The weather is on your side, as long as you do not let the sun set the schedule.

Paint that goes onto a wall baking in full sun dries too fast. It can skin before it levels, show lap marks and brush marks, and not bond as well as it should. Here is how to avoid it.

βœ” Follow the shade. Start on the walls the sun has not reached yet and move around the house as it does.
βœ” Do the north and west walls in the morning. They get the hardest afternoon sun.
βœ” Touch the wall. If it feels hot to the back of your hand, wait.
βœ” Check the forecast. Most exterior paints need a dry window after application, so avoid afternoons with storms on the way.
βœ” Respect the recoat time on the tin. Hot days speed things up, but do not rush the second coat.

Every Prominent Paints data sheet lists the temperature and humidity range the product should be applied in. If you are not sure, ask in store before you start.

Your roof takes more sun than any other part of the house. It is also the part most people only look at when it starts leaking.

October is a good month to check it. The winter rain is behind us, and summer storms are still ahead.

What to look for:

βœ” Faded, patchy colour on tiles or sheeting
βœ” Green or black growth on cement tiles
βœ” Rust spots on galvanised sheeting, especially at overlaps and screws
βœ” Paint that is peeling or lifting

For cement tile and galvanised roofs, Prominent Paints Premium Roof and Paving is a UV-resistant acrylic roof paint built to handle the expansion and contraction a roof goes through between hot days and cool nights.

The prep does most of the work. Tiles need algae removed with Fungal Wash and a proper clean before priming. Galvanised needs rust and oxidation dealt with first. Then two coats minimum, and keep an eye on the forecast: the fresh coating should not see rain for the first 24 hours.

The walls get all the attention. The gutters, fascias and garage door are what make a house look tired.

They take the same sun as your walls, often more, and because they are metal or timber the paint on them works harder. Once the gloss goes, rust and water are not far behind.

A quick pre-summer checklist:

βœ” Look for chalky, dull paint on gutters and downpipes
βœ” Check the undersides of fascias for peeling
βœ” Check the bottom edge of the garage door, where water and dust sit
βœ” Treat any bare or rusted metal with the right primer before top coating

For the finish, Prominent Paints Water-Based Gloss Enamel is made for exactly these jobs: gutters, palisade fencing and garage doors. It is non-yellowing, so white trims stay white, and being water-based it is easy to clean up after.

Choosing an exterior colour this summer? Start with the wall, not the colour card.

The same colour behaves differently on every side of your house. A wall that faces north or west takes hours of hard afternoon sun. A south-facing wall might hardly see direct sun at all. Pick one colour for the whole house without thinking about that, and in two years it will look like two colours.

A simple way to plan it:

βœ” Sun-facing walls: lighter, warmer tones that stay true. Think warm whites, stone and soft clay.
βœ” Sheltered walls and stoeps: this is where a richer, deeper colour can live happily.
βœ” Front doors and details under an overhang: the best spot for your bold accent.
βœ” Strong reds, oranges or yellows anywhere in the sun: choose a standard factory colour over a counter-mixed match, and allow for an extra coat to cover.

Our Colours of Home palettes are a good place to start. Browse the full collection using the link below, then bring your shortlist into a branch and we will help you test it against the wall it is going on.

If the house still feels like an oven at 9pm in summer, do not blame the weather. Look up. The roof has been soaking up sun since mid-morning and it is still passing that heat down into the ceiling.

Our new guide, Beat the Heat: A Homeowner's Guide to a Cooler Roof This Summer, walks you through fixing it at the source:

βœ” What a reflective roof coating actually does. Neuklad Cool Roof is formulated to reflect up to 30% of solar heat, so less of it ever gets into the roof.
βœ” Why you need to know your roof type first. Cement tiles, fibre cement, galvanised and Chromadek each need their own prep and primer.
βœ” The cleaning nobody wants to do. Fungal Wash for the algae, a proper wash for the chalk, and repairs before a single tin is opened.
βœ” When to paint. Cooler part of the day, never onto a sun-heated roof, and never onto a damp one.

It also shows you how to work out exactly how much paint to buy, so you are not running out halfway across a slope.

A ten-second test every homeowner should do before repainting an exterior wall.

Rub your palm firmly across the wall on the sunniest side of the house. Now look at your hand.

If it comes away with a white or coloured powder, the wall is chalking. The sun has broken down the old paint film, and what is left on the surface is loose pigment.

Why it matters: paint does not grip powder. Go straight over it and your new coat is only as strong as that chalky layer underneath. That is how a fresh paint job starts peeling within a season.

How to fix it properly:

βœ” Wire brush or scrub off the loose chalk
βœ” Wash the wall down and let it dry fully
βœ” Seal with Prominent Paints Neuklad Alkali Resistant Sealer to bind the surface
βœ” Then apply your top coats

One extra step, and it is the one that decides whether the new colour lasts.

Live near the sea and your textured exterior looks dirty within a season or two? It is not bad luck.

Standard texture coatings have a rough, open surface. At the coast, salt and airborne dirt settle into that texture and stay there. Rain does not wash it out, and the wall looks tired long before the coating has actually failed.

That is why our technical team recommends Prominent Paints Ultra Shield for coastal exteriors instead of a standard texture coat. You keep the textured look, but with a sheen finish that gives salt and grime far less to hold on to. It also bridges cracks, which matters on walls that move with sea air and summer heat.

A few coastal habits that help any exterior last longer:

βœ” Wash the walls down before repainting to remove salt deposits
βœ” Make sure the surface is sound and dry before the first coat
βœ” Choose the product for the exposure, not only for the look

Heading to the coast for the summer holidays? Sort the walls before you go. Find your nearest branch using the link below.

October is when the South African sun starts working on your walls in earnest. Five minutes outside now can save you a repaint in autumn.

Walk around the house and start with the north- and west-facing walls. They take the most sun, so they show trouble first.

βœ” Colour that looks washed out compared to the sheltered side
βœ” A powdery residue on your hand when you rub the wall
βœ” Hairline cracks around windows and corners
βœ” Gutters, fascias and garage doors that have lost their sheen
βœ” Roof sheeting or tiles that are faded, rusting or growing algae

None of these fix themselves over summer. UV keeps working on a coating that is already tired, and a hot roof keeps pushing heat into the house.

Spring into early summer is the window to sort it, before the heat properly settles in.

Take photos of what you find and bring them into your nearest Prominent Paints branch. Our team will help you match the right system to the surface. Find your nearest branch using the link below.
