VEHICLE CRIME AWARENESS: THE SMALLEST DETAILS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
As we approach the festive season, vehicle security deserves extra attention. Hijackings and vehicle theft remain serious concerns, and knowing what to look for, and what information to report, can make a real difference when a vehicle needs to be located.
When you see something, say something.
And when you report it, share the details.
If you witness a vehicle theft, hijacking or suspicious activity, try to remember or safely record as much relevant information as possible.
WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR?
1. Make and model: Is it a Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Volkswagen Polo or another vehicle?
2. Colour and shape: Is it black, white, silver or another colour? Is it a hatchback, sedan, SUV or bakkie?
3. Visible damage: A broken door handle, dented bumper, cracked light, damaged window or missing mirror could help distinguish the vehicle from others of the same make and model.
4. Unique markings: Stickers, business branding, unusual accessories, roof racks, bull bars, modified wheels or other distinctive features can help narrow down the search.
5. Registration number: Record it accurately if you can do so safely. If you only remember part of it, report what you know rather than guessing.
6. Additional information: Was there a dashcam? Was a tracking system fitted? Were there distinctive items or accessories inside or on the vehicle? Such details may assist investigators and recovery teams.
WHY DOES REPORTING QUICKLY MATTER?
The sooner relevant information reaches the appropriate response team, the sooner it can be assessed and acted upon. Accurate details can help responders identify the correct vehicle, distinguish it from similar vehicles and make better-informed decisions.
If you witness an incident, prioritise your safety. DO NOT follow, confront or attempt to stop suspected offenders. Report the incident to the appropriate emergency services or police, and provide any information you have.
You don't need to know everything. One accurate detail could be the detail that matters.
See something?
Say something!
Every detail counts.
