As always, demand is exceptionally high during the first two weeks of December, and unfortunately, we cannot service all of South Africa at once. To avoid any disappointment with availability, we encourage you to book your seasonal maintenance early.

To help you get ready, here is a quick property maintenance checklist to handle any unexpected surprises:

Yearly Maintenance Checklist
Roof & Exterior: Inspect the roof, clean gutters, check waterproofing, and inspect windows and door seals for gaps in masonry.

Drainage & Appliances: Clean all drains (sinks, showers, baths, basins) and clean filter seals on taps, showerheads, washing machines, and tumble dryers.

Pool & Outdoor: Change the pool sand and grease driveway gate wheels and metal hinges.

Fittings: Check shower grout condition and apply a quick seal where needed. Grease fire chimney cowls.

Security & Safety Checklist
Alarms & Systems: Replace fire alarm and smoke detector batteries, and test your irrigation system monthly.

Emergency Readiness: Service your fire extinguishers, review your emergency drill, and confirm your assembly point.

General Checks: Ensure all doors and windows lock properly, replace expired lightbulbs, and fertilize your garden (recommended every 3 months).

My name is Jephry and my company is ###XX ######. I run a construction company and I'm a contractor under HANDYMAN DIRECT. I started construction in 2016 as a foreman until 2019 when l started my company.
I joined HANDYMAN DIRECT since 2021 and have been with them till to date.
HANDYMAN DIRECT has been a very good platform for me and it has helped me with my growth. I've grown and have saved a lot of customers under the Platform with passion and enjoyment.

My experience and how l conduct myself to be able to go this far is-
Firstly l got to fall in love with this Home renovation industry. yes we work very hard for income but mostly l enjoy, love and feel enormously proud to see the finale product of my own work.

I like to challenge myself in new designs and I'm able to design from scratch bathrooms and kitchens and eventually agreeing to a unique custom design for customers.

To be able to go this far l have a dedicated team which gives it's all when a task is ahead of them. They have understood how l work and my expectations to the point of noticing mistakes even before l see them.

My Moto: l always remind myself and my team "we are blessed", every time we have meetings. It's "IF I CAN SEE IT, THEN CLIENT WILL SEE IT AND NOT BE HAPPY SO RATHER WE FIX IT NOW"

It is peaceful to be with Handyman direct l have been utmost happy with clients l have come across from this platform also because l play my part with serving them with a professional outcome on their expectations.

Word to the Wise, here is the dilemma: some customers think charging 500/h is just to expensive [ fair enough, for some it might sounds like a lot] but you are dealing with Professionals. So customers usually chose the best available right ? ... a problem communicating with their first choice contactor, absorbing their time that we don't charge for. [ please do us a favour, skip calling us and spend your time, looking for the worst rated, cheapest available, like number 10 in line.]

Some continue to call more options, trying to get to get to a R200 / h operator [ jet that R200 guy also charge a R300 call out fee. now you are back to R500. I can guarantee you that the R200 / h isn't a "High Octan /focused" operator and time will be take, aiming to get more hours out of you and it seams there is always another problem or expect the customers to go buy their own products. Or the deal sound better for 2 guys @ R500 /h. Fair enough. Some jobs require 2 people.

Here is the secret. If you want to be clever, start here. The Price per hour has more to do with what can be done in a hour/ amount of jobs / h. Example: A team of 4 contractors was requested in Cape Town to hang 3 large painting, took them the hole day and charged R12 000. [ not from pour service]
Then called us to install 3 baby gates and to hang 5 painting = R1500
So how long did it take and how many guys ? [ answerat the bottom]

So it is verry annoying to have customer expecting us Professional to do free assessment call out's. R 50 fuel, 35 min traveling then compiling a quote / then invoice + 30 min [ min], Unwrap their packages, go get products and making sure its clean after work. So, before i charge R 500/h I'm already expected to spend 2 hours of my time "for free". Is that fair for customers ? Is it fair for contractors to insist on a assessment / quote call out fee ?

Its a good Good question, loaded on both sides.

Word to the observers, if you chasing price, don't contact your best first choice Handyman, [ you mos know you are going to waist their time, is that fair ? ]
Skip straight to number 10 on the your list, start there.
The informal you are looking for probably don't even log review.

Think before you act, before you attract the wrong person in your act.

answer: the quote was accepted at R2000, we charged R1500 [1 guy took 2 hours].
We just couldn't charge R2000, that would have been wrong.
Job after was for a elderly lady to change a light bulb, call out 500, but ended up spending 2 hour + delivery getting a new door lock, and sorting out a double wooden door which needed much adjustment as it pulled skew after many years. This job ended at 25o /h done as a favour to her.

The right time to message us or post a job is when you are fully ready to request a contractor and discuss your specific project with them.

2. Pricing & Admin Efficiency
Our rates are fixed. For example, a local 1-hour job (like installing a shelf) is R550. We do not negotiate on prescribed hourly charges.

Please avoid back-and-forth admin queries that take up 45 minutes to 1.5 hours for minor tasks. This allows our team to keep processing jobs quickly.

When You Are Not Ready to Post a Job
We often experience inefficiencies due to "missed expectations." You are likely not ready to request a contractor if:

You haven't contacted your insurance provider yet (if the work is an insurance claim).
