Manager or Leader — what's the difference?

A manager makes sure the work gets done.

A leader makes people want to be part of the journey.

Management is about tasks, deadlines, processes and performance.

Leadership is about direction, trust, ownership and people.

After more than two decades in technology, one thing I've learned is that transformation isn't achieved by simply telling people what to do.

You need to bring people with you.

A manager can deliver tasks. A leader creates ownership.

Don't start your AI strategy with AI. Start with the problem.

AI is becoming part of almost every technology conversation.

But before asking “Which AI tool should we use?”, ask:

🔹 What business problem are we solving?
🔹 Where are our processes inefficient?
🔹 Where are people spending too much time?
🔹 Where could AI improve productivity or customer experience?

Then ask whether AI is actually the right solution.

And don't forget the people.

Successful AI adoption needs training, communication, governance and adoption — not just technology.

My approach?

Start small.
Prove value.
Learn.
Then scale.

Infrastructure sharing is about much more than saving money.

Imagine three companies needing connectivity in the same area.

Instead of three companies digging three roads and deploying three separate cables, why not build the infrastructure once and share it?

That can mean:

✅ Better utilisation
✅ Lower investment
✅ Less duplication
✅ Faster deployment
✅ Reduced environmental impact
✅ Better value for customers

After 20+ years in technology and telecom, I've learned that infrastructure decisions aren't just technical decisions.

They can become business strategies.

Why do some digital transformation projects fail — even when they have great technology and big budgets?

In Episode 2 of **Lessons from 20+ Years in Technology**, I share three reasons I've seen repeatedly throughout my career:

🔹 User adoption

You can implement the best technology in the world, but if the business problem isn't clear, stakeholders don't own the change, or people don't adopt it — transformation won't deliver the expected value.

Technology is important.

Technology doesn't transform businesses. People do.

After 20+ years in technology, one of the biggest lessons I've learned is that transformation starts with people — not technology.

Before choosing the tools, platforms or solutions, we need to make sure people understand:

• Why are we changing?
• What problem are we solving?
• What's the benefit?
• Are our stakeholders aligned?
• Are our teams ready to adopt the change?

Technology comes next.
