BWM Designers & Architects are an award-winning architecture office that operates throughout Europe. Their main areas of focus are architecture, interior design, narrative design and hospitality. Founded in 2004 and led by Erich Bernard, Daniela Walten, Johann Moser, Markus Kaplan and András Klopfer, the company and the multinational 70-member team stand for a personal approach and a cooperative development process. Whether designing interior spaces, residential and urban construction projects, or museum and exhibition concepts, BWM Designers & Architects always work out a specific project’s unique formal language and the corresponding design concept in strategic workshops with the client.

Adaptive reuse means conversion of an existing building for a purpose other than that for which it was originally built or designed. Redevelopment of existing structures has always been an issue of central importance to us – projects include the transformation of the 25hours Hotel Wien at MuseumsQuartier from a 1970s student residence into a design hotel of the 21st century, the conversion of a former clerical residence into MAGDAS Hotel Vienna City, the redesign of architect Carl Appel’s office building as The Hoxton, Vienna, and, most recently, the Funkhaus Wien.

Once a year, we cause quite a stir at Margaretenplatz — namely, when the entire BWM team gathers on the steps of Margaretenhof for a group photo. Thank you all, it’s always great fun!

The subsidised residential building at Kreitnergasse 36 in the Ottakring district of Vienna was designed in an L-shape and arranged around a courtyard. This means that it has two completely different exteriors: While the main façade facing Kreitnergasse is homogeneous and continuous, the courtyard side with balconies, oriels and external spiral staircases offers a varied sequence of projecting architectural elements. Each residential unit has either a glazed bay window that brings additional light into the flats or an open space in the form of a balcony or a garden on the ground floor. Some of the flats on the top floors have their own roof terraces.

For the food service areas at VIECON Vienna Congress & Convention Center run by Gerstner we created a range of new seating setups, adding communal tables of varying heights as well as benches and seating islands. In the buffet area, for example, high tables create a calm anchor within an otherwise very busy zone. The deli, on the other hand, features smaller tables that can be pushed together as needed to accommodate groups of two, four or six. In the restaurant, we developed a varied landscape of seating heights, structuring the space through different types of seating, including a centrally placed seating island with cosy benches, a raised communal table and classic diner-style seating. Flexibility was also built into the design, with some of the furniture conceived for multiple uses …

The entrance area at Figlmüllers Café am Dom, with its elegant high-set stone tables and banquette seating, is designed for quick, casual meetups. Overhead, an opening in the ceiling displays a three-dimensional map of the city of Vienna as it was around 1910. The long counter, typical of classic Viennese espresso bars, provides a convenient stop for those in a hurry…

As part of the Open House Vienna Festival, Gerhard Girsch, Head of Architecture and Funkhaus Project Manager, will lead a guided tour on September 27, offering insights into the building’s historical and spatial structure and the careful transformation of Austria’s oldest Funkhaus. Admission is free, but space is limited (first-come, first-served).
