Meet Bella, our Plant Procurement Officer.

With a background in horticulture and further study in Conservation & Ecosystem Management, Bella brings strong knowledge of South Australian native plants, further developed through volunteering with local Landcare groups. After three years as a Team Member/Propagator at LCS, she has recently returned to our team in her new role as Plant Procurement Officer.

Her advice for anyone starting in horticulture? Learn your botanical names!

Outside the nursery, you'll find Bella hanging out with her two dogs, Harry and Delilah, op-shopping or cooking 🐶

Plant of the Month: Wahlenbergia luteola (Yellowish Bluebell)

A delicate perennial herb with fine foliage and blue flowers that bloom through spring and summer, Yellowish Bluebell is a great addition to mass plantings, revegetation projects and mixed native landscapes. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and its flowers provide an attractive food source for butterflies and other pollinators.

Nursery visitors 🦋

The Lesser Wanderer is a familiar Australian butterfly, recognised by its orange wings, black markings and white spots. Its caterpillars feed on plants in the milkweed family, while adults visit flowers for nectar.

Just one of the many small signs of life we get to see around the nursery. 🌿

Staff Pick: Ajuga australis

Commonly known as Australian Bugle, this fast-growing native groundcover is a favourite for its soft foliage, seasonal colour and versatility. With deep green to purple leaves and purple flowers that attract pollinators through spring and summer, it brings texture and colour to landscapes.

Thrives in full sun to part shade and suitable for coastal and inland climates.

Swipe to see why we love it!

Plant of the Month: Juncus holoschoenus (Joint-leaf Rush)

A hardy, tufted rush, Juncus holoschoenus is a versatile choice for landscapes where erosion control, water management and habitat creation are important.

Thriving in full sun to part shade and moist to wet soils, it can help stabilise wet, sloping areas, damp grasslands and stream or wetland banks. Its upright form also adds structure to rain gardens, biofiltration systems and the margins of ponds and water features.

Beyond its practical uses, Juncus holoschoenus provides shelter and micro-habitats for frogs, lizards, waterbirds and other small native wildlife.

We’ve been putting Banksia ornata cones over the fire, and there’s a good reason for it 🔥

Banksia ornata stores its seeds inside tough, woody cones. In nature, intense heat from bushfire causes the follicles to open and release the seeds onto the freshly burnt ground, where they have the space and conditions to germinate.

Our nursery team mimics this natural process by placing the cones over an open fire and carefully removing the seeds as the follicles open.

A fascinating example of how understanding the way native plants respond to fire can inform propagation methods and help keep these species flourishing!

🪴 Plant of the Month: Senecio megaglossus

Did you know this golden native daisy almost disappeared from the wild?

By the late 1990s, Senecio megaglossus, commonly known as Superb Groundsel, was thought to survive as only a handful of plants in a conservation area beyond Port Augusta.

In 2023, explorers from the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre followed a forty-year-old record to a remote rocky cliff a hundred kilometres south, where they discovered another small population. Thanks to dedicated seed conservation and propagation, thousands of plants are now helping secure the future of this rare species.

With its striking blue-green foliage, vibrant golden daisy flowers and exceptional drought tolerance, this hardy shrub is perfectly suited to native gardens, revegetation projects and waterwise landscapes.

A small plant with an extraordinary conservation story!
