Simply Sarj

Simply Sarj 'My Recipe for Cultural Interchange' is a 433 page book for cultural exchange and adaptation. 6NORTH

In my book I explain that all cultures can learn from each other and my goal is to help people on each side of this cultural interaction because I have experienced the complexities and misunderstandings of cultural differences and sensitivities/insensitivities and I want to help bridge the gaps between cultures. I know that it is necessary for international students, parents, host families, migrants and refugees to prepare themselves well before they live in another culture because I remember what I had to experience when I moved from the East to live in the West many years ago. Let me share with you some of my experiences as a traveler and Homestay mother. Some of my stories are funny and some are sad, but they are all very relevant to the realities of this experience that we all call life. I have learnt that it is inevitable that people will change as a direct result of cultural interaction and exchange and that is why I have referred to this two-way experience as Cultural Interchange

Thanks to all who came to my first in-person fundraiser!

There was plenty of delicious homemade chai, sweet potato donuts and other pastries kindly donated by Bakers Delight at Newton 🫖

$10 from every donation this month is going to McGrath Foundation to support people with cancer. During my own cancer journey, the kind nurses from McGrath looked after me so gently.

This is my little way of saying thank you, and giving a bit back.

If you couldn't make it last Sunday, you can join my Bucket List journey to stay updated on future events: https://mybucketlistjourney.eo.page/23jyw

Comfort Food week episode 2 ABC iview I made epic Sambal to add to my main dish of Mee Goreng and I have been cooking this dish almost daily since then 😊

We were also asked to create our favourite sandwich recipe. I chose to share my mother’s Roti Paratah (flaky roti) I made the dough from scratch 👏 I chose a pantry staple filling tin of sardines in tomato sauce cooked it with caramelised onions and added chopped cucumber and chopped red onions for the crunch. During my childhood and school lunches my mother would get up at 5am in the morning to prepare our breakfast and packed lunch boxes, which will contain her roti rolls with sardine filling. She was cooking for 11 of us 😱but I only made two for the judges to taste. My mum certainly was a Super woman and a legend and I am so blessed that I learned all this from her. 😇

Every contestant story touched our hearts 💕 CWA challenged us to make their famous scones and I was up for it because their technique was similar to what my mother in law thought me nearly 50 years ago back in Jersey in the Channel Islands. I’m so proud to have learned so much from the teachers in my life 🙏😇🫶

Finally someone had to go home!! We said goodbye to our beloved fellow contestant Loi. 🥹😢 sadly every week we’ll be saying goodbye to someone, so, stay tuned for episode 3 on Sunday evenings at 7.30 pm Recipe of The Year on ABC TV 📺

I still remember him fondly 🥹

Feeding people is one of the simplest ways I know to say "you're not alone."

That's why I want to keep the "pay it forward" tradition which started at the Adelaide Central Market going.

For a donation, you can have a donut and cuppa chai at our first in-person fundraiser for breast cancer awareness!

How ironic it is that nearly two years ago I was on a shoot with these cute puppies for an advertisement for BreastScreen SA ...

And now I’m on my journey with breast cancer.

For my generation, you just don't talk about cancer.

You keep it quiet... and certainly don't put it on the internet!

But I'm already 68 and thought there was less harm in putting my story out there.

If talking about it means one person feels a little less alone, or goes and gets checked, or just feels able to say the word out loud, then I've done the right thing.

I thought there might not have been enough time, but my agar agar dessert set!

Now it's time to see what the judges Melissa Leong , Dan Hong and Mark Olive thought of it 💛

Make sure you follow me Simply Sarj for the final video to see if my dessert wins! (and to stay updated on the next chapter of my cooking journey with Cannoli Boss 😉)
