A big plant deserves a big pot — and a beautiful one.

The Havana is a tall, tapered statement planter in a fibre-clay terrazzo — the look of natural stone at a fraction of the weight (19.5kg empty, so one person can position it). One generous size at 62 × 72cm holds 148L: real depth, a proper root run, so a feature tree can stay put for years rather than needing potting up next season.

It's built for the plants that carry a courtyard — an olive, a clipped Lilly Pilly cone, a standard of any kind. Five colourways from Arctic white to near-black Raven cover most schemes. UV-stable and weatherproof for a South Australian summer, indoor or out, with a drainage plug included so it doubles as an indoor cache pot.

Presence, without the height.

The Savannah is the rounded counterpoint to the range's angular shapes — softly mounded and wide-shouldered, 60cm across but only 57cm tall. That's the whole idea: real presence where a tall pot would block a view — beside a pool, under a window, at the end of a low wall.

The generous 52cm opening suits what a narrow-necked pot can't — a spreading agave, a beschorneria, a mass of dianella or ornamental grasses that can spill over the shoulder. It's a fibre-clay terrazzo (the look of stone, 17kg empty), UV-stable and weatherproof for a South Australian garden, in Blizzard white or Onyx black, with a drainage plug so it works indoors too.

Your front path, in full spring bloom.

Rhaphiolepis indica 'Oriental Pearl' (Indian Hawthorn) is a proven performer in Adelaide's Mediterranean climate. It forms a naturally compact, rounded shrub 0.8–1.0 m tall and 1.0–1.2 m wide, with dense, glossy dark-green leaves and bronze-red new growth. From late winter through spring it's covered in clusters of fragrant white blooms opening from pale pink buds, followed by small decorative blue-black berries.

It's made for exactly what you see here: a low hedge defining a path, driveway or garden bed. Plant 0.6–1 m apart for a standard hedge, or 0.5 m for a dense one. It also suits sunny courtyards, feature pots by the entry and coastal plantings.

It's drought-tolerant once established, heat- and wind-tolerant, front-line coastal tolerant, and handles slightly saline or alkaline soils. Low maintenance, too: a light prune after flowering keeps it tight, plus a slow-release feed in spring. Bees and butterflies love the flowers.

A low hedge that stays neat without the fuss.

Callistemon viminalis 'Better John' (Better John Bottlebrush) is an improved dwarf bottlebrush bred from 'Little John' — easier to grow, quicker to establish and with richer blue-green foliage. It forms a naturally compact, dense mound with soft silvery new growth, and in mid to late spring it's covered in small, rich red brushes that feed honeyeaters and pollinators.

At 0.6–1.2 m H x 0.6–0.9 m W it's ideal for a neat low hedge along a path or driveway: plant 2–3 per metre (35–50 cm centres). It also works mass planted or as a feature in pots for courtyards and entrances.

For Adelaide: drought-tolerant once established, heat and wind tolerant, fine in second-line coastal spots, and more tolerant of slightly alkaline soil than 'Little John'. Full sun gives the best bloom. A light tip-prune after flowering keeps it tight and sets up next season's flowers.

Nothing else in a garden looks like white bark.

Betula pendula 'Alba' — the Silver Birch — is grown for exactly what you see here: white peeling bark, a fine, airy canopy that lets light through instead of blocking it, and a graceful multi-stemmed frame. Add gold autumn foliage and late winter to spring catkins and it earns attention in every season.

Mature size is 8–15 m high by 4–7 m wide, growing 30–60 cm a year, and it lives 20–40+ years. Full sun to light part shade suits it, with afternoon shade a help in hotter districts, in a deep, moist but well-drained loam or sandy loam.

Here's the part worth being straight about: silver birch is not drought tolerant. It needs consistent moisture, which in a South Australian summer means a deep soak weekly and two to three in a heatwave, plus an annual mulch. It's moderately heat tolerant with that irrigation, frost hardy, and wind tolerant. If you want a tree that survives on rainfall alone, this isn't it — but if you have a spot you can water, few trees repay you like it.

One pruning rule to remember: don't hard-prune in late winter or early spring, because it bleeds sap. If it needs work, prune in mid-summer only.

In this photo it's doing the job it's best at — a single specimen in a lawn with a light canopy overhead. Underplant with hellebores, liriope or clivias, which are happy in that dappled light.

A retaining wall that flowers for months.

Carpobrotus rossii (Native Pigface, also known as Karkalla) is a salt-loving Aussie native succulent groundcover. Fleshy, triangular grey-green leaves carry large pink–purple, yellow-centred flowers from spring to autumn, heaviest through spring and summer, followed by edible red–purple fruits.

It stays low (0.1–0.2 m) and spreads 1–2 m, which makes it ideal for spilling over retaining walls, rockeries and edges, or mass planting as a tough, waterwise groundcover in hot, exposed spots. Plant 2–3 per m² (closer for faster cover).

For Adelaide it's about as tough as it gets: drought-tolerant once established, heat and wind tolerant, and happy right on the coast. Give it full sun for the best flowering and free-draining soil, then a light tip prune after flowering to thicken the mat.

The hedge you plant so you stop thinking about the neighbours.

Syzygium australe 'Resilience' is the benchmark screening lilly pilly for Adelaide gardens, and the reason is in the name. It was bred and selected for high resistance to psyllid pitting — the bumps and dimples that wreck the look of older lilly pilly hedges — so the foliage stays smooth and showroom-neat.

It's fast without being unruly: 40–70 cm a year, reaching 3–5 m high and 1.5–3 m wide, and easily maintained at 2–3 m with pruning. Plant one per metre for a hedge, or 0.7 m apart for an ultra-tight screen. Expect repeated bronze-red new flushes through the year, fluffy white flower sprays mainly through spring and summer, and pink-red berries in late summer and autumn if you don't clip straight after flowering.

For our conditions it's a genuinely low-fuss choice: drought tolerant once established, heat, wind and coastal tolerant, light frost tolerant, and it handles regular clipping and urban conditions without sulking. Full sun to part shade — more sun means tighter growth and stronger colour. Give it well-drained loam, sandy loam or improved clay loam, avoid chronic waterlogging, and water deeply every 10–14 days through summer once it's established. Tip prune after each flush, mulch in spring, and feed with a low-phosphorus native fertiliser.

Late winter is a good moment to get a hedge line in — it settles before the heat and puts its first flush on in spring.

Golden hour, on repeat.

The Hope Water Feature is a compact, modern water feature with layered stone textures and warm lights that create a soothing, flowing sound. At 36 cm wide x 40 cm deep x 82 cm high, it's sized for a courtyard corner, patio or entry, and the layered stone texture suits a rendered or brick wall behind it.

It arrives ready to run: the mains-powered pump is included, so you fill it, plug it in and it works. The pump recirculates the same water, so it only needs topping up as it evaporates. Integrated LED lighting means it earns its place at night as well as during the day. Prefer to run it away from power? A solar pump can be fitted in place of the one supplied.

It's cast in polyresin, which carries the look of stone at a fraction of the weight — 12 kg empty, so one person can move it. Indoor or outdoor, and backed by a 12-month warranty.

Moving water changes how a garden feels: it softens traffic noise, draws birds in, and gives a small courtyard something to be about.

Winter is when this one shows off.

Strelitzia reginae — the Bird of Paradise — flowers heaviest from late winter through spring, with intermittent spot-flowering in autumn. So the orange-and-blue crane flowers in this photo are what the plant is genuinely doing in Adelaide right now.

It's a sculptural, low-care feature: broad, paddle-shaped leaves forming a tidy clump around 1–1.5 m high and wide, evergreen year-round, and long-lived at 20–30+ years. Give it full sun to light part shade — bright light means more flowers — in a well-drained loam or sandy loam. Improve heavy clay and avoid waterlogging. Once established, a deep soak every 7–14 days in summer is enough.

It's tough where it counts here: drought tolerant once established, heat, wind and coastal tolerant, and it handles light frosts to about -2 to -3°C (protect it in cold Hills pockets). The nectar-rich blooms feed bees and honeyeaters.

Design-wise it's made for exactly what you see here — a bold accent near an entry or path, set into gravel or pebble. It's also excellent in large pots, and pairs beautifully with lomandra, cordyline and blue chalk sticks.

The weeping tree that takes Adelaide's heat in its stride.

Agonis flexuosa (Willow Myrtle, WA Peppermint) is the classic Western Australian peppermint tree. Its long, fine, deep-green leaves hang from elegant pendulous branches and release a fresh peppermint scent when brushed, and small white flowers in spring–early summer bring in the pollinators.

It reaches 5–10 m H x 3–6 m W, but can be kept smaller with formative pruning while young. Use it as a feature or shade tree over a lawn or courtyard, or as an informal screen or windbreak at 2.5–3 m spacing.

It's exceptionally well suited to Adelaide: highly drought-tolerant once established, with excellent heat and wind tolerance, coastal tolerance (first and second line), and it copes with sandy or limestone soils. Full sun gives the best density and weeping form. Mulch in spring and avoid hard pruning into old wood — that's about it.
