The Building Looks Right. Why Is the Assembly Still Wet?

The AS IICRC S500 recognises low-evaporation materials and assemblies. A Class 4 water intrusion involves significant water absorption into those materials or assemblies that release moisture slowly.

If your monitoring does not confirm satisfactory progress, the AS IICRC S500 says restorers should adjust the drying plan. Why?
This video shows how and why.

Should you open the property up—or close it and start dehumidifying?
Early in a drying project, the indoor humidity ratio can be substantially higher than the outdoors. Once safety and contamination controls allow it, exchanging that humid indoor air for lower-humidity-ratio outdoor air, can assist in the removal of the initial vapour load. You can’t know that without taking measurements.
What is the difference in drying systems?

Can Your Drying System Keep Up?

The technical objective is to maintain air conditions that support moisture leaving the materials, while removing the resulting vapour without creating secondary moisture problems. A balanced drying system!

Two Temperature Differences That Matter for Drying Projects

We start the day in a beautiful onsen in Queenstown, New Zealand, after a fresh snowfall. In this video, we continue our drying series by discussing two key temperature differences that matter for drying projects: the difference between air temperature and wet material temperature, and the difference between wet surface temperature and dew point temperature. We explain how evaporation requires energy and how heat transfer supports it, and why surfaces must be above the dew point to avoid condensation. We also clarify that heating air alone doesn't lower dew point, and that surface temperature alone doesn't guarantee moisture removal from materials. We emphasize checking material moisture readings and following IICRC S500 guidelines. Stay tuned for the next reel on matching humidity removal to evaporation load.

Drying? Does my drying need more Air movers?
Never ever assume that more air movers automatically mean faster drying.
We look at when available moisture depletes and drying progresses, reducing airflow may assist on some materials.

Have you ever asked,”Why Has the Drying Slowed Down?

The drying may have been progressing well, but Now it’s slowed down. Does that automatically mean that the equipment has stopped working? No!
Touch on the drying stages and your equipment.

New Zealand it’s your time!
Looking forward to seeing some of you over the next 2 weeks.
We have approved IICRC WRT & TCST classes booked out with multiple private team meetings also in facilities! 👌🏻✅

The Surface Looks Dry. What About the Core?

Moisture can remain deeper inside timber while the exposed face dries.
In Reel 2, of this weeks series, an insight into how surface evaporation, internal moisture movement and moisture gradients work together—and why a surface reading alone may not tell the full story.

Maximize Extraction Before Adding Drying Equipment

We talk about the importance of extracting as much water as possible before relying on evaporation in water damage restoration. Removing accessible liquid water reduces the energy needed for evaporation, speeds up drying, and prevents prolonged drying times. We also discuss guidelines from the S500 on carpet and underlay removal based on water category, and share a personal preference for replacing all underlays regardless of category.
