Going up…! Great to have some of our Building Services Engineering team from Hobart for a walk of ParkLife 2 this week. Nothing like getting on site to see your work in action. Despite a few days of torrential rain in October (not that you’d know it this week..!), ground and level 1 is poured, with structure works tracking on program. And the views north and south aren’t half bad either 🌿

ParkLife 2, enabled by HIP V. HYPE, architecture by Austin Maynard Architects and built by MARKSCON. More info via our bio…!

Today we welcomed the next gen of sustainable building advocates from Monash University’s Sustainable Buildings Student team on a tour of Ferrars & York and HV.Hotel. Discussing everything from designing for people, de-centralised vs centralised services, facade systems and the role of timber in our built environment…sharing what we hope to be insightful nuggets from industry. A great group of architects, mechanical engineers and civil engineers to name a few, after all the best learning is achieved across faculties and disciplines…!

Our Head of Better Buildings (ESD) David Mahony made the move north in July, joining our Sydney studio. Pictured here with Liam at Walama - Ballast Point Park, Walama means “to return”, and the park, once one of Sydney’s major oil distribution sites, is now public open space on the harbour.

Thanks to a growing list of clients across NSW, the ACT and QLD, having David on the ground means we can work together more closely, alongside our expanded Building Services Engineering capability.

Back in Melbourne, Simon Liley has joined us as Better Buildings (ESD) Team Lead (VIC/TAS/SA), bringing a background in building physics, resilience and human wellbeing. His work spans hospitals, university masterplans and social housing, including the country’s first 6 Star Green Star Buildings v1 Community Centre. Simon also has a strong focus on making sustainability ‘real’ 🌿✌️

We’re pleased to share a studio base with the Hill Thalis A + UP crew in Surry Hills. Reach out to Dave to say hi…!

Mid air construction update…! We love seeing this slice of Brunswick from the sky, Clifton Park on one side, Gilpin Park on the other and ParkLife 2 rising in the middle.

From up here, you can see MARKSCON are well underway with the precast concrete structure for the lift shaft taking shape, and steel reinforcements laid out for the ground floor slab.

Things move quickly on site with the level one slab pour already underway since Austin Maynard Architects captured this drone 🙏

Not a bad week when you’re on a line up with former New York City mayor Bill de Blasio and Professor Carlos Moreno, the urbanist behind the 15-minute city…!

HV.H Founder hv.h_liamwallis is speaking at the inaugural Melbourne Assembly, a three-day public forum at Fed Square from 19 to 21 October, hosted by The Age and The University of Melbourne.

The forum explores the tension between growth and liveability across four critical pillars: Shaping the City, Innovation & Education, Healthy Places & People (where you’ll find Liam), and Sport & The Arts. Should be a good conversation…!!

For over ten years, our Better Buildings team has helped design and certify some of Australia’s highest performing buildings. Now we can engineer the systems that bring that ambition to life too…!

Our Building Services Engineering team is led by Julian Cook, a Chartered Mechanical Building Services Engineer with more than a decade of MEP design across residential, retail, education, healthcare, heritage and tourism projects.

Julian and his team of specialist designers and engineers are based in Hobart, working across every Australian state and territory, from the Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake Visitors’ Centres to our own ParkLife 2 in Brunswick.

On the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Signature Walk, recently shortlisted for the 2026 Sustainability Awards, Julian led a zero-trenching services strategy. Every electrical, hydraulic and mechanical system runs above ground, concealed beneath the boardwalks, an off-grid system that sits lightly on Country.

ESD strategy and services engineering can now be developed side by side, from concept through to construction. Head to the link in bio for more info 🌿

Site progress at ParkLife 2 this week (architecture fans, swipe for architectural concrete 😏)…! If you’re wondering about the pink cylinders, they’re moulds for setting the structural columns that will support our floor slabs. Next week, the ground level slab gets poured, taking us out of the basement and up to street level 🙌

ParkLife 2 is enabled by HIP V. HYPE, with architecture by Austin Maynard Architects and built by MARKSCON. 🌿

Over 70% sold, all remaining apartments enjoy uninterrupted views of either Clifton or Gilpin Park (or both!)

We often lament the state of the world and blame our politicians. In Tim Read, we had the opposite, a highly engaged and energised local member, with the intellect to navigate real complexity alongside the demands of party politics.

We shared a commitment to many common causes, and to the places where they intersect, climate, health and housing. Tim understood that these are not separate challenges but one, and he took an active interest in supporting our projects and our work in that spirit. Our community is richer for his leadership.

Back in June 2021, we were fortunate to sit down with him to discuss exactly that, the connection between climate, health and housing. Ideas like his outlive us and their power is the gift of those willing to make a contribution.

Vale Tim. Our thoughts are with your family, and those touched by your humanity.

What happens when three families buy one brick veneer house together and rebuild something better? The Davison Collaborative is a three townhouse project in Brunswick, with each home the same size as the original dwelling while tripling the density.

Six years on, the project is still doing what it set out to do, with faces new and old. 🫶🏻

We don’t need to build 20-level buildings to increase density, we need to use what we have more effectively.

Thank you to the Guardian Australia, Doosie Morris and Charlie Kinross for capture the spirit (and the challenges!) of collaborative housing. 🙌

In 2020 our team walked the banks of the Birrarung guided by Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Bill Nicholson Jnr. Uncle Bill led a smoking ceremony and shared stories of Country above Dights Falls, a river crossing, fishing ground and gathering place for clans of the Kulin Nation for thousands of years.

Land is not something to be owned, but cared for, and we photograph Our People at Dights Falls with long time collaborator Tess Kelly as a reminder of our responsibility to carry that understanding forward in the way we work. 🌿
