Spring greens are abundant and luscious at the moment, and many of those offerings are from the Asteraceae family β€” Chicory, Dandelion and Smooth Hawksbeard.
Smooth Hawksbeard (Crepis capillaris) is often mistaken for Dandelion when the plants are young. However the flower stalk of each provides an unmistakable identification. 🌻

An odd patch of Stinging Nettle (Urtica) in the winter field is a beneficial find. We add the tips to soup, then cut down the remaining growth to make compost tea.
Steeping the greens for a month results in a high-nitrogen liquid fertilizer that works wonders in the vegetable garden! Be sure to dilute the solution before applying β€” one cup of compost tea in a watering-can is usually ample!

The unusual green fruit known as Choko β€” or Chayote (Sechium edule) β€” is easily propagated this time of year. Carefully place each fruit in a jar of water, or on some damp soil. 🌻 Transfer to pots once the roots and shoots are well established, and plant in the garden after the frosts have finished. Then watch the vine climb at great speed over everything it touches! 🌻 A fascinating and prolific food source for next Autumn !!
