Most driveways are treated as an afterthought: a strip of paving and a wall there to hold the edge in. This one in Chapman wasn’t.

The sandstone retaining wall follows the curve of the drive instead of running straight, with sandstone steppers leading up through the garden beside it. Building to a curve means every block is cut and set to the radius on a concrete footing with drainage and gravel backfill behind it, so the wall stays put through Canberra winters.

It’s more work than a straight wall. But a straight wall would have fought the shape of the block, and you’d see it every time you pulled in.

That’s the difference between a wall that holds dirt back and a wall that was designed.

Building the thing is only half the job. The other half is making sure the client actually enjoys getting there.

For John that means making it easy to ask a question, raise a concern, or change something without it turning into a big deal. Know what you can actually deliver before you say yes or no, and make sure what the client's picturing matches what's getting built.

If something needs to change, that's a variation, and it gets talked through properly instead of sprung on anyone. Most jobs run on a shared group chat too, so nothing sits there unanswered for a week.

Somehow it's the one group chat on the job that never turns into a mess.

Ever had a tradie actually keep you in the loop? What made it work, or what would've made it easier?

Not every garden needs to start from scratch.

The brief for this Canberra front garden was to keep the mature plants and structures already there, and make the whole space work. The front steps were the sticking point. They were no longer safe to use.

Rather than tear everything out, we kept the original structure, refinished the steps in new materials, and designed the garden around the planting Ange wanted to keep.

In Ange’s words: “What was previously unsafe and not fit-for-purpose has been transformed into a set of steps that are not only visually appealing but also solid, practical, and usable with complete confidence.”

Thank you, Ange. Every In Depth project has a dedicated project manager, a client relationship manager and a team leader, so you always know who to talk to, from the first meeting to handover.

Every sloped block asks the same question: terrace it, or fight it forever.

We've answered it on three different streets, in Chapman, Taylor and Garran, and it's the same move each time: stepped retaining walls that turn a slope into ground you can actually use. Different materials, different budgets, same logic underneath.

That's design solving a site problem before it ever becomes a maintenance problem.

Got a sloped block doing nothing but growing weeds? Let's talk about what it could become.

That rust-coloured edging you keep seeing in new Canberra gardens is rust. That’s exactly the point.

It’s corten steel. We keep specifying it because it does exactly what we want and then stops: it weathers to that colour once, forms its own protective layer, and then needs nothing from you. No painting, no sealing, no replacing.

At this job in Holder it does three things from one material: holds a raised planter, wraps a young tree’s garden bed and edges the lawn.

Second photo is what it looks like the week it goes in. First photo is what it looks like a few months later. The bit in between is why we detail the edges carefully: fresh corten will run onto concrete and paving if you let it.

Considered design is picking a material for what it won’t need from you later, not just how it looks on day one.

Curious whether corten suits your garden? Ask us; we’ll tell you honestly where it works and where it doesn’t.

A stone wall doesn't get built. It gets placed, one piece at a time.

At this Macnamara build, every sandstone block gets squared with a hammer and chisel before it goes in the wall, checked against the one next to it, then set. It's slow, and it's meant to be. A wall that's rushed looks rushed.

That's the difference between stacking stone and building with it. One holds for a season. The other holds for good.

Planning something that needs to be built properly, not just quickly? Let's talk about the design.

Nobody compliments a fence. They just complain when it's crooked, or when it becomes a whole thing with next door.

Out at this Higgins job, Michael is putting in a new Colorbond fence to give the client's two big dogs a run of their own, rebuilding the deck behind it with proper, safer stairs, and running a concrete and sleeper path through from the front yard, tying the spaces together.

Michael's rule: measure everything twice before you touch a post. Get your heights, squares and levels sorted first and set your post depths properly. It only looks like a simple job once someone's done all of that right.

Before he'll call it finished, the colour's solid with no nicks or marks, the capping's done, and every rail's screwed off tight.

Ever had a fence turn into a whole negotiation with the neighbours? Tell us about it.

Every finished-garden photo skips the part where it looked like a building site.

At this Holder build, the middle stretch was turf going down in the dust alongside the corten, with the crew working through it roll by roll. By the end, the frontage was clean, planted and mulched instead of a mess of offcuts and bare soil.

That gap between the mess and the finished photo is most of the job. The photo's just the very end of it.

Got a yard that needs the same turnaround? Let's talk about the design.

A raised garden bed is only as good as what goes into it.

At this Ainslie property, the custom recycled corrugated iron wicking beds were filled and planted the same way everything else gets built here, properly, with the whole crew on site and the right mix underneath every plant. It's not a glamorous stage of the job. It's the one that decides whether the garden tives or just survives.

Thinking about raised beds done properly? Let's talk about the design.

Nobody asks to see the drainage plan. Everybody notices when there isn't one.

At this Scullin build, every channel and fall was set before the paving went down, so water has somewhere to go instead of pooling against the house after the first real storm. It's the least photogenic part of any job, and the part that decides whether the rest of it lasts.

That's craft. Getting the parts nobody sees exactly right.

Planning a project? Ask what's happening under the surface, not just on top of it.
