Tomorrow is Halloween, so we got our resident ghosts to find the spookiest and scariest trees in the nursery.

Their picks include -
🧛 Japanese Maple ‘Bloodgood’ - the name says it all, with its dark blood red leaves to match.
👻 Weeping Birch ‘Youngii’ - because it’s been weeping with fright ever since a ghost moved into its branches.
🐈‍⬛ Crab Apple ‘Crimson Knight’ - with dark red foliage it's perfect for the darkest of Halloween nights.
🌴 Canary Island Date Palm - this one because it’s spiky enough to draw blood if you get too close.

We still have a handful of appointments available tomorrow if you’d like to come and see them in real life. You might even spot our ghosts.

We caught up with Judy & Alan recently to hear how their garden has come along since they popped out to the nursery and ordered some trees and plants.

The full story lands in our November newsletter on the 11th, with plenty of photos. Wait until you see what the front yard looked like before.

Ross and the truck are heading to Geelong, the Bellarine and the Surf Coast on Tuesday 10 November, with stops in the towns along the way like Meredith, Bannockburn, Lethbridge and Teesdale.

It’s a good time to plant while the soil is still holding moisture from the spring rain, as well as getting your garden picture perfect for Christmas and the summer holidays.

After the rain, it’s worth a quick walk around the garden to check the stakes and ties on any young trees and plants.

A good soaking softens the soil around the roots, so anything newly planted is more likely to lean or rock in the wind. Give each stake a push to make sure it’s still firm, then look at the ties. They should hold the trunk steady without cutting in, with a little room for the plant to move. If a tie is rubbing the bark or has gone tight as the trunk has thickened, loosen it off or replace it.

Ross spent last week doing the same job along our rows (and replacing the w**d mats while he was there), so the trees in these photos are a good example of what to aim for.

For larger advanced trees, our most recent blog post goes through it in more detail.

🌳 We have been busy behind the scenes working on our website, mostly so you can find what you’re after without needing to call or message us first.

Live stock quantities are now showing, so you’ll see exactly how many of each tree are left.

Every pot size of a variety sits side by side in the one listing, with no jumping between pages to compare.

Each size is marked as in stock, on pre-order or out of stock, with updated photos so you can clearly see what you’re buying.

Ordered and chosen pickup? Booking your pickup time is now the next step after you pay, so it’s all sorted in one go.

The site is also getting a bit of a refresh, and you might notice some changes as you browse around. It’s being updated section by section, which means some pages have the new look while others are still catching up.

The sun was out this week and our team has been making the most of it.

Emma has been busy getting customer orders together and Nhang has been moving newly potted plants out onto the rows and securing them. Ross has been working his way along the w**d mats checking stakes as he goes. I got stuck sorting out the waste piles, not a glamorous job but someone has to do it, while Tash ducked out between website updates to soak up some sunshine and get some content.

If you’d like to come out and see the place for yourself, jump online and book your appointment.

The Gleditsia Sunburst has been putting on quite a show this week in the sunshine. New spring growth has come through bright gold on the tips and the whole row is just glowing.

They’re a good pick for shade over a lawn without a tree that takes over the whole yard. Also known as Sunburst Honey Locust, this tree’s canopy is fine and open, so it throws dappled light rather than heavy shade. They also cope with Ballarat frost, wind and dry summers without much fuss.

There are plenty in 400mm pots at around 2.5m tall, ready to plant this spring. Photos only show so much though, so come and see them for yourself. A few appointments are still available this Saturday.

Every pruning pile here turns into something useful eventually. We mulch the branch waste and add it to old potting mix and ash from the fire. Then in goes manure from the hens and whatever excess soil is lying around from other jobs. Come autumn, all the leaves we vacuum up off the deciduous rows get added too. It gets left to break down for about six months, turned over monthly, until it’s rich soil we use right back in our own gardens here. Nothing goes to waste.
