Carallia Brachiata
Also known as Corkwood or Freshwater Mangrove. This species can often be found growing near other mangroves though not in salt water. It is, however, resistant to salt spray and saline soils. It features adventitious roots that hang from the trunk and can grow up to 1m long.
The fruit, wood and leaf of the Carallia Brachiata has many benefits. The small berries are sweet and edible. The wood traditionally had many uses including musical instruments, axe handles, spears and fighting sticks. Trials have been done to assess the wound healing ability of extracts from the bark with success. Leaf material from the Carallia Brachiata has been found to be active against some tumours. The trunk of this tree is habitat for many creatures, epiphytes, and button plants.
This impressive tree is native to Northern Australia and can grow up to 25m.
