WELL THAT’S ONE HELL OF A WEEK… AND APPARENTLY I NEED TO SLOW DOWN AND WATCH MY LANGUAGE! 😂
Thousands and thousands of trees dispatched from our farm this week. All grown right here, in our climate, for our climate.
CLIMATE READY TREES. GROWN BY US!
Trucks in, trucks out. Echuca, Shepparton, Bendigo, massive landscape orders everywhere. Even a load heading down to the big smoke of Melbourne.
The farm crew have been smashing it. Dave’s been doing enormous days on the road. I’m starting to wonder if the bloke actually lives in his truck.
Phone rings.
Accountant.
Ahh s**t. He’s probably heard about my w**e barrel sale.
Skip that call. 😂
Next job. Book the buses, organise the staff Christmas party. How hard can that be? There’s only 40 odd people to organise.
Then a few meetings.
Including HR.
Yep, got called into an HR meeting. Apparently I need to slow down, think before I speak and use better words.
Left that meeting confused. Thought I was doing pretty well.
Then the ugly stuff. More legal meetings.
“Yes sir, absolutely sir, whatever you want sir.”
I’m learning. Ask for permission, beg for forgiveness.
Or was it the other way around?
S**t. Better ring HR again. 😂
Somewhere amongst all that I managed a few public speaking gigs at Probus clubs and a HUGE turnout at Kyabram Garden Club yesterday for my last speaking engagement of the year.
What a fantastic way to finish! I’ve loved meeting these wonderful groups, sharing our story and continuing my investigation into which garden club makes the best scones.
Still no winner. More research required.
Back to the nurseries and…
HOLY S**T THE JOINTS LOOK AMAZEBALLS!
Sorry HR.
What I meant was the presentation and visual merchandising standards are exceeding expectations.
There. Happy now? 😂
Seriously though, both stores look incredible.
Our farm crew, dispatch team, drivers and our retail crews, otherwise known as THE SMILING ASSASSINS.
Big smiles for customers. Daggers for Craig every time another truckload arrives.
“WHERE THE HELL ARE WE SUPPOSED TO PUT ALL THESE?”
No idea. But they always work it out!
Somewhere in between all that…
“Hey Zowie, what’s Santa doing?”
Righto. Let’s get Santa organised and raise some money for our local hospital again.
Six years of Santa photos at Plantfarm. One of my favourite things we do.
Another job on the list. ❤️
Walk the dogs.
“COME ON BOB!”
Seriously mate, we’ve got things to do. No time to smell every bloody rose.
Although I suppose that’s a bit rich coming from someone who sells roses for a living.
Back to work.
“Hey Kate, how are sales going? We’ve got wages Monday.”
Nearly 40 people relying on us to keep this whole crazy show moving.
And somehow Kate manages to keep me grounded amongst it all.
DING!
Email.
Another bloody email.
Righto, sit down, read it, type a reply, read another, type another.
BORING.
Can we please get back to trees? 😂
I did manage to sneak away for lunch a couple of times into our new POTTERS SHED at Echuca.
Not open to the public just yet, but Brett has created something pretty special. A peaceful little space full of beautiful homewares.
Just me, Brett and some lunch.
We’ve been keeping the door locked. If HR finds us hiding in there, neither of us will be allowed out.
Then Friday evening arrives.
Finally sit down. Might even have a b**r.
Phone goes.
“Hey Craig, it’s Bec. I know it’s Friday night but we could really do with some more Backyard Bliss.”
Of course you could, Bec.
It’s Friday. It’s ALWAYS Friday.
“Yep love, I’ll bring some Saturday.”
AND HERE WE ARE. SATURDAY MORNING!
Sun’s out, rain’s coming, both nurseries are absolutely loaded and the gates open at 9!
What’s on today?
Write a Facebook post.
Hang on. You’re reading it. Tick. ✅
Might do a few Facebook Lives from the stores, then catch up with Dec at the farm.
“Morning Dec, reckon we should build a new dispatch area.”
“When did you decide that?”
“3am this morning.”
“Have you got a plan?”
“Yep. Only 47 three-metre posts to drop in.”
She’ll be right.
Apparently my ADHD brain holds construction meetings at 3am without inviting anyone else. 😂
Then Sunday’s here. Tidy up, load the trucks, get ready for another mountain of landscape orders heading out Monday.
Shana’s back Tuesday the real farm boss.. comes in all like who’s been touching my stuff type attitude . Quick Liv, hide the cans fluff up her chair and let’s pretend we didn’t miss her one bit..
AND NOW WE DO IT ALL AGAIN!
That’s the life of a small family business owner.
One minute you’re a farmer, next you’re in HR, talking to lawyers, organising Christmas parties, checking bank balances, raising money for hospitals, replying to emails or explaining to your accountant why you’ve decided to sell w**e barrels at cost price.
All while trying to remember to walk the dogs.
And somewhere amongst all that, Kate and I get to work with some incredible people, grow thousands of plants and build something we’re both incredibly proud of.
If you visit either of our nurseries this weekend, have a look around.
Every beautiful display represents the hard work of a team that genuinely cares.
I’m bloody proud of them all.
Sorry HR.
I’M VERY PROUD OF THEM ALL. 😂
🌿 ECHUCA MOAMA PLANT FARM
13–15 Northern Highway, Echuca West
🌿 SHEPPARTON PLANT FARM
535 Archer Road, Kialla
BOTH STORES OPEN 9AM–4PM ALL WEEKEND!
Anyway, better get moving.
Bec wants her Backyard Bliss, Dec doesn’t know he’s building a dispatch area, Brett’s probably wondering who’s been eating lunch in his shop and my accountant’s probably still trying to ring me.
THE LIFE OF A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER.
Wouldn’t change a thing.
Except maybe HR.
And emails.
Definitely emails. 😂
Love you all,
Craig 🌱
