Stairs. We use them every day without really thinking about them.

But they’re also an opportunity to do a lot more than get from one floor to another.

They can bring light into a dark space.
Connect without closing things off.
Frame a view.
Create a place to pause.
Or, occasionally, just add a fabulous splash of colour.

It was such a pleasure working with this wonderful couple on their forever home. They had lived in their home for many years, so this was about creating something that felt right for the next chapter of their lives.

Somewhere along the way, we started calling it the Happy House, partly because the house made them happy, but also because we couldn’t resist putting a few little smiles into it along the way. Arches, curves and little arcs found their way into the design.

They soften the spaces, create little moments of joy and, we hope, make you smile too.

There was lots of laughter throughout this project, and a real sense of trust and friendship that made it such a joy to work on.

A forever home, with a few little smiles built in.

Looking forward to sharing the finished photos and smiles with you soon!

Sometimes the smallest decisions have the biggest impact.

At Mariners House, we used spruce timber battens with a specialised treatment to create their distinctive silver finish.

But it wasn’t just about how they look.

The battens filter the light, create shifting patterns of sun and shade, and add layers of privacy without closing the house in.

One material, doing a few different jobs — while quietly shaping the way the house feels.

Our Two Rooms project is featured in Green Magazine Issue 111! What a beautiful way to celebrate 10 years of Kuzman Architecture.

This project holds a particularly special place in our hearts. It is Sandi’s own home, and began as one of her first projects when she was venturing out on her own and starting the practice.

The story is also a personal one. The article shares how Sandi and her son Zak met Tim, and how the three of them came together to begin the renovation and create a home for their new family.

It’s a project filled with life, change and connection.

A lovely reminder of where this journey began.

Thank you green magazine for sharing its story.

When we get a thank you note like this from our clients, it is EVERYTHING.

We really do see the client, architect and builder as a team.
Figuring things out together, celebrating the good bits, navigating the hard bits, and sharing all the little moments in between.

Building a house is a long journey. It can be messy, exciting, stressful, joyful… sometimes all in the same day!

Our hope is that we enjoy the ride together, make something truly special, and along the way build relationships and connections that last long after the dust has settled.

So, thank you. Notes like this mean more than you know.

10. TWO ROOMS

A heritage cottage needed two things that seemed to pull in opposite directions. A room to gather. A room to withdraw.

On a narrow Footscray site, these competing needs found balance.

Two new spaces emerged as mirrored corten metal pods, set apart to frame a shared garden at their centre.

The studio is self-contained, flexible, quiet, offering solitude without disconnection.

Each demanded its own relationship to the garden, yet required fundamentally different atmospheres.

The rusted metal recalls tin sheds that once occupied the rear. But here, utilitarian language is recast with precision and care.

Inside, warm birch ply and finely crafted joinery soften the metal shell.

The living room connects back to the existing house, anchored to kitchen and dining.

Timber dowel detailing brings rhythm to the interiors

A room to withdraw.

A room to gather.

Between the two rooms, the garden becomes the heart. Held, protected, and quietly expansive.
