Here I was thinking that our avo season was done. Turns out, the powers that be (mainly my wife) have determined that there is still plenty of fruit left on our trees and thanks to a cool spring, it hasn’t yet reached the overly greasy-peasy stage. So we think we’ll keep the stall open for at least another couple of weeks. Same deal: a buck per fruit, mostly Fuerte and Hass at this point. Guac on.

Books about fungi seem to be having their moment and for good reason - mushrooms offer ideal metaphors for our time. Anna Tsing’s contribution is a fascinating work of multi-species ethnography, that is, a story about how humans, pine forests and matsutake fungi have developed a shared culture of entangled interdependence. It’s an enlightening and enlivening read!

I’m really keen to start reading this. Pascoe’s Dark Emu is one of the great works of Australian non-fiction in my view and this new book promises an equally brilliant distillation of history. I just hope that unlike the discussions around Dark Emu, critics choose to play the ball, not the man.

I was given this for Christmas (birthday?) years ago, started it, but for sine reason didn’t swallow the hook and finish. This time around I’ve been listening to the author-read audiobook on my drive to uni and my afternoon walks. I’m glad I gave it a second chance. It’s a great book that exemplifies the kind of human and more-than-human entanglements I’m researching in my PhD. And it’s totally rekindled a weird fantasy of mine to take up falconry. Sadly, the practice is outlawed in Australia, but you know what isn’t: Reading. Ideally physical books, audiobooks where necessary. Read what you like, and occasionally, read to be challenged. I generally try to alternate between fiction and non-fiction but I suggest doing whatever it takes to cultivate an open and curious mind. One of the keys to a well lived life is an unquenchable thirst for reading.
